Support for demonstration grows

One week to go

Just 7 days to build the Peace and Liberty march

The situation in Iraq goes from bad to worse, with the US bombing of Tal Afar, more than 150 killed in suicide bombs this week and growing opposition to the occupation. Britain and the US claim that troop withdrawal would result in civil war - a claim they have been making for 2 years. In reality the troops’ presence is doing terrible damage to Iraq: killing civilians, destroying whole towns, propping up a government which has little legitimacy, backing a constitution which threatens to break up the country.

Coaches are being booked from around the country and in London there is daily leafleting and postering to mobilise for the march.

On Thursday, the actor Julie Christie and singer Brian Eno joined campaigners to hand a letter in to Downing St supporting the demo and calling the troops to pull out. Over 100 people signed the letter, including Billy Bragg, Tony Woodley, professor Richard Dawkins and Anita Roddick. See report in the Independent.

More...! :applause:

5. Any estimations on how big the demonstrations will be?
I'm hoping to take advantge of the publicity of this demonstration to send an info pack to the media here in France. The goal is to show the French media how Bush manipulated public opinion (WMD etc) when preparations for Iraq actually got underway the week after inauguration day.

I've got all the info - timelines etc, but I want to make sure that the event will be big enough to attract international attention. Timing is essential when working with the media.

Any ideas how many people are expected? 1000 - 10 000 - 100 000 or more?

If this turns out like the election fraud demonstrations in december where there were less that a hundred, this could be a flop.

There would probably need to be over 20 000 to start to attract attention.

You're my eyes and ears in the States and I thank all the DUers for their work to help the truth prevail.

Please try to give me a reasonable estimation of the interest the march has generated, as I must go out on a limb and I could loose a lot of credibilty points if this doesn't live up to expectations.

6. I found this in the DC forum:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=148&topic_id=1216&mesg_id=1216

These are just the DUers who found this thread who are going.
I think there might be a huge turnout. I'm hoping, but don't know where to go to get any concrete numbers. Perhaps someone else can help???

7. DC cops think this might be a big one:
Police Fortify Numbers for War Protests
March to Be First Since D.C. Passed Arrest Law

By Del Quentin Wilber
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, September 18, 2005; Page C07

D.C. police have canceled days off and are planning to deploy several hundred officers during an antiwar demonstration next weekend that will include a march near the White House, but officials said they expect no trouble.

Saturday's rally, part of a weekend of protests and counter-protests, will be the first demonstration allowed to surround the White House in more than a decade. It is the first major rally to occur since a D.C. law that requires police to give clear warnings before arresting demonstrators took effect.

Passed in response to the much-criticized mass arrests of protesters at a downtown park in 2002, the law also restricts the use of police lines to contain nonviolent demonstrators and requires that police wear clearly identifiable badge numbers. Police also may not stop spontaneous rallies -- as long as such incidents do not clog sidewalks or violate traffic laws -- by arresting demonstrators for protesting without a permit. <snip>

Organizers are asking protesters to gather at 11 a.m. Saturday on the Ellipse, where the rally will take place. The march will cover a stretch of streets in the blocks surrounding the White House and Justice Department and wind up back on the Ellipse, organizers said. <snip>
