Mark Matthews/Last Buffalo Soldier R.I.P

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Mark Matthews, the oldest Buffalo Soldier, has died at the age of 111.

He'll be buried Monday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Matthews joined the legendary unit of black cavalry troops in 1910 at the age of 16. He soon found himself serving under Gen. John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing in the Army's pursuit of Pancho Villa, the revolutionary from Mexico who was considered a bandit.

This is a great story. Imagine being 111. One hundred and eleven years!!! And he made it that long as a black man and a war veteran. That's so fucking cool.

3. My grandfather was with Pershing going after Pancho Villa...

went to visit the camp after moving here to NM...it's about 50+ miles from here.

It was pretty weird, thinking my grandfather was in these part so long ago...

I've been doing some genealogical research of the Matthews family (VA Eastern shore/ D.C. area) members who served in the USCT and was wondering if he might also be a relative.
