SCATHING, BLISTERING, DAMNING editorial, read it and weep "W"
The president was on vacation, all right--vacation from his duty
RICHARD AMRHINE
The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, VA
Date published: 9/18/2005

WE HAVE BEEN told that President Bush is not entirely to blame for the poor response to the suffering and devastation left behind by Hurricane Katrina. Indeed, there is plenty of blame to divvy up among the officials who are elected to plan ahead for troubled times...

That is also why we have a president, the commander in chief, who we count on to take charge and to feel our pain. He seemed to be trying to do that, finally, in a speech from New Orleans on Wednesday night...

Thankfully this is America, and this real-life Alfred E. Neuman will be out of office in 2008. Has three years ever seemed such an eternity?

In the meantime, we have mid-term elections in 2006 that allow Americans to send a message on how they think the president is doing. That message should be loud and clear.

In Katrina's wake, people have been asking how they can help. First, they should send a donation to a legitimate charity. Then, if your car has a Bush bumper sticker on it, grab a Sharpie and put a big X through it. And another thing: Somebody remind the president that daddy's not always going to be around to help make things right.

2. I loved this para:
"It's not hard to see why the president is being criticized in the hurricane's aftermath. Some have charged that the slow response suggests President Bush doesn't care about black people. That's not fair. It's black people who are poor and vote Democratic that he doesn't appear to care about."

logic is a wonderful thing.

37. I like the Brownie quote (maybe because I have a Brownie in my house also)
"The day after that, President Bush praised the FEMA director: "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job."

Well, I have a Brownie at my house--the Girl Scout kind--who had a better grasp of the situation than Michael Brown.

41. Wait. Why do you think all these people were spread all over
the country? Are they going to register to vote in their new homes? I hope so, because if they don't, look at how many people, who would vote Dem, that would not be voting.

Does anyone think there was a strategery (lol) put into place here?????

The next election is going to be another mess because of this. Watch and see.

That's (The Free Lance Star, Fredericksburg, VA) is my local newspaper!

I was wondering why I was beginning to like it (especially the Editorial Section) better than the OTHER paper I have a daily subscription to ... you know that bastion of "fair and balanced" only second to FOX, The Whore-sington Post. :P

It is a blue haven in a pretty red area.

The Free-Lance Star used to moderately liberal, but several years ago was bought by some right wingers IIRC. I am suprised they would print an editorial so critical of dear leader.

There was a composer of the time, Alfred Newman, so the initial may have been added to avoid slander suits or other problems. Wikipedia has more:

I did get her to vote for Kerry in November but since then she's backtracked, her chickenhawk boyfriend is a dittohead or something.

No, the poor response to Hurricane Katrina wasn't all the president's fault, but it was a Xerox copy of him and his administration: Inept, unprepared, uninformed, lackadaisical, unaware, and untruthful. The Bush presidency has been in over its head ever since the first plane hit the north tower.

25. Most EXCELLENT! I love these statements.
The day after that, President Bush praised the FEMA director: "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job."

Well, I have a Brownie at my house--the Girl Scout kind--who had a better grasp of the situation than Michael Brown.

Scarier still is that Brown's boss, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was just as clueless: "I have not heard a report of thousands of people in the convention center who don't have food and water," he said on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, The Washington Post reported this presidential quote: "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."

The proper statement would have been, "I think everybody anticipated the breach of the levees--except me." (BINGO!)

Excellent, excellent editorial!!

28. "First, they should send a donation to a legitimate charity. Then, if...
...your car has a Bush bumper sticker on it, grab a Sharpie and put a big X through it...".

Well, I would change the priorities just a bit...

1. Donate to a legitimate charity.*

2. Throw Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' (--or the nearest Louisiana levee!).

3. If your Bush bumper sticker hasn't shriveled and disappeared like the Wicked Witch of the West, give it some help.

4. Throw Diebold and ES&S election theft machines into 'Boston Harbor' (--or the nearest Louisiana levee!).

5. Throw Diebold....

You get my point.

---------

Example of a legitimate charity:

Veterans for Peace in Coddington, LA. Send donations to: VFP Chapter 116, c/o Ward Reilly, 645 Kimbro Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70808, or VFP Chapter 116, 28500 Sherwood Road, Willits, CA 95490. Emails: pjtate@sonic.net, mike@vfproadtrips.org.

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4200/is_20050606/ai_n14657367

"...study to determine ways to protect the region from a Category 5 hurricane has been shelved for now."

"Landrieu said the Bush administration is not making Corps of Engineers funding a priority. I think it's extremely shortsighted, Landrieu said. When the Corps of Engineers' budget is cut, Louisiana bleeds. These projects are literally life-and-death projects to the people of south Louisiana and they are (of) vital economic interest to the entire nation."

"One of the hardest-hit areas of the New Orleans district's budget is the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which was created after the May 1995 flood to improve drainage in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes..."

"The district has identified $35 million in projects to build and improve levees, floodwalls and pumping stations in St. Bernard, Orleans, Jefferson and St. Charles parishes. Those projects are included in a Corps line item called Lake Pontchartrain, where funding is scheduled to be cut from $5.7 million this year to $2.9 million in 2006..."
