My fundie neighbor asked me yesterday if I wanted to go grocery shopping at the Super Walmart with her. I declined, as usual, and she knows that I boycott Walmarts because of their business practices. Here's her reply:

look in the flyers for sales at other stores. Walmart is not the only store in town that you can get bargains at. I NEVER shop there and I can always find what I need at the same price somewhere else. People have a misconception that their prices are cheaper than everywhere else. They are low prices, but other stores can offer you the same thing. It is a matter of principle. Go to the damn dollar stores. Anywhere but Walmart.

It's not just the WalMart thing. There's a whole string of insanity to go along with this story. I found it immensely humorous (after my head damn near exploded) that a woman who supposedly lives her life around Christian principles tells me she can't live on principles. LOL

I don't know about you but every day it seems I come closer and closer to just blasting all these religious fanatics outa' the water every time they make nonsensical statements like that. Zero tolerance. If I thought it would change the minds of even 5% of them I would do it. 7. I admire your effort to boycott Wal-Mart. However,

in the south, for instance, if you live in a small town, Wal-Mart is the only option you have. I, for one, would have to drive 75 miles to find a Target or other store for what I need. I will add though that I avoid Wal-Mart most of the time and clip coupons like you suggested. I'm just saying that it is very hard for some people to avoid having to go there. You can bet that if the day ever comes when we have an alternative to Wal-Mart, I'll be going there. It's not likely though. The largest Wal-Mart in the world is in my hometown. Part of the "agreement" my democrat-led city made with Wal-Mart corporate was to close several other major stores here in town before the Wal-Mart would open. Now, many of us are having to go to Wal-Mart whether we like it or not.

I do admire your effort and your success at being able to boycott them.

I realize that some folks can't avoid the WalMart, for various reasons. The lady in my OP was making a 17 mile trip out of her way to go grocery shopping at that particular Walmart rather than spend a bit more at local stores.

We don't have a Costco here, nor are there Target stores. I guess the biggest competiton is Kmart and I do most of my shopping for summer kids' clothes there. School clothes are bought at the GAP outlet or Old Navy at the mall. I also do a lot of shopping online and I spend my grocery money at two Mom & Pop stores that are appreciative of the business and quite honestly have better quality meats and fresh produce than any grocery chain. Paper products and household cleaning supplies I get at Dollar General.

The thing that disturbs me the most is hearing local people say how sorry they are that the malls and WalMarts ran local smalltown stores out of business. These are the same people who ooohed and aaahed when Walmart opened years ago. I can't even buy a pair of shoes in my hometown now. So in some ways I know my family contributed to the decline of local economy over the years by shopping at malls. But now we're not only managing not to feed the WalMart beast, we ignore it altogether.

a GAP or Old Navy. I agree with you about in the beginning. When we first got Wal Mart here, I was unaware of their seedy way of doing things. My family mostly went out of town to shop back then or to Kmart or Roses here. Those were better times for us financially though, both for the family and the pre-NAFTA county industries. Now, it's county line to county line fast food joints and the largest Wal Mart in the World. We don't even have a movie theater here any more. The closest one is 35 miles away. It has been over 15 years since I have sat in a movie theater. This place sucks, but we have the largest Wal Mart in the world, yippeee, not. You know. It sucks.

How did they do that? Get them on some trumped-up zoning violation? Usually local stores go out of business because of Wal-Mart's predatory pricing tactics. This is the first I've heard of a city government somehow forcing stores to close for Wal-Mart's benefit. Wow.

I live in a similar area...just these people vote Repugnican and the only explanation they'll give is "we always do". Dare to engage them on serious issues and you get the "I don't really like to talk politics and religion" line. Yes, thse are the people that terrify, since they vote, if they vote, purely on what they're told.

I had to break my wife the habit of Wallyworld. She just couldn't pass up the low prices and, after years of scrimping and saving, this is a virtue she felt she was compromising to shop at Costco. But after I showed her several shows on what Wal-Mart does to the community, where that money goes, how they squeeze local retailers and distributors and so on, she gladly avoids the place now.
