A thread that should have made the greatest page
Is here. Even though it's time for recommendation has expired, it's just amazing and well worth reading and adding your experiences.

If you agree recommend this thread as a proxy.

4. what always hits me ...
in these discussions about the good ol protest days, there's a big lament that the young these days are different, not as committed, more materialistic, more fearful, victims of bad boomer parenting, somehow lacking. What a useless guilt trip.

WHY --just because the social protests of the 60's were led by youth --DO we feel that it SHOULD be the youth who are leading the protests now??? These are completely different times...vastly different conditions (despite many of the same problems). The resistance to rightwing control now will be put up by people of ALL ages, families, seniors. It makes no sense to reach back nostalgically for some radical kids to light the fire under us. This is a cross-generational effort. And it's not all happening in the streets either...we need professionals --lawyers, doctors, teachers, builders, media people--we need everybody who cares to come together and make some big changes.

5. My experiences don't back that lament up either.
Thee youth I see (daughter's in high school) can be categorized into 3 groups, as of the end of the last school term:
Bushbots: smallest group.
Ignorant of the whole mess: largest group.
Becomming active/aware.

The last group was growing then, and I hope it will pick upsome steam.

6. you, i agree we need everyone, but it also seems to me that first we
need to learn from the past (something B* can't understand) and recognizing the differences, as you point out, might, just might enable everyone, just like in the thread, build dialog to where the direction should be..maybe. At least I know I need to know more to figure out where to go from here, but if I just need to be spontaneous and come up with my own way, I think I might also learn here what that new way should be...Maybe

talking about and learning from what was done in those days. Makes sense. But you also have to talk about how things have changed, and what can be expected of people at various stages of their lives without the criticism that somehow the younger generations around now are FAILING (in some duty to save the world that many of them didn't even know they had). Heck NONE of us (who know what democracy is) have failed--not the WW2 generation who deserve a good retirement, not boomers who got absorbed by families and careers, not GenXers, and not Millenials --NONE of us DESERVE to have to be in the business of saving our country from the &*%#$ GOVERNMENT at this point?!? I just don't like the guilt-producing implications that "the kids aren't as (whatever) socially concerned as we boomers used to be..." This is counter-productive.

Your question is good Seansky and I think we need to harness the potentials of ALL the generations out there today to pull together in this cause. We need to confront the Brave New World we find ourselves in with new tools, new ideas, new strategies, while learning as much as we can from the old days. But the old days are gone--we can draw from those memories without going down the we "failed" track (or the youth are "failing us" now track), or any such divisive nonsense. That tired lament is depressing. Carpe Diem.

9. Yes. I agree with that observation.
There are plenty of young people involved in the anti-war movement right now. It is great to see the marches attended by a cross section of the population -- young, mature and old.

7. I agree that is a great thread...
I think people probably failed to recommend it because it kept rising to the top on its own yesterday. I love these kinds of discussions that bridge the years between the generations.

10. I think that people didn't recommend it
Because it wasn't really poignant until it hit a critical mass. It sort of grew organically, and blossomed.

14. I was too young, but I think the turning point in public opinion
about the Vietnam war, was when people stopped talking about how many American soldiers had died, and started talking about how many from their county, or High School had died.
