Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder Losing In Early Election Returns
Berlin, Germany (AHN) - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is behind in early returns according to election officials holding Sunday's elections across the country.

Conservative challenger Angela Merkel, who is leader of the conservative Christian Democrats, would become the nation's first female chancellor if she wins the election today.

Unlike Schroeder, Merkel does not want Turkey to join the European Union and wants to have a firm and new connection with Washington, D.C., which is something Schroeder has been cold to since the war in Iraq began.

1. SPD is 1% behind

The Left Party, which are the reformed Communist of East Germany are polling around 7.5%. Schroeder has said he will not form a coalition with them, but if he did he would have enough to form a government.

2. She's in trouble
just look at the faces at her party's headquarters. Schroeder will have no choice but to join with the left. CDU/CSU have serious problems here. They expected to win. SPD have done way better than the propaganda suggested. Looks like the pope wasted his trip.
