What other areas are subject to storm surge?
It's unlikely that the next hurricane will hit the same spots, but the prediction is for more category 4 and 5 storms over the next few years. How much of the Gulf and East Coasts are under 30' above sea level, and how many people are living there?

2. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of the US population lives below 30'
or perhaps it is within 5 miles of the coast.

7. We are about 20 miles inland from the coast
(in Texas) and are only at 13 ft above sea level... We also have a bunch of refineries in our area, so if we got hit with a cat. 4 or 5, the chemicals alone would make our area unlivable for a long time. I would imagine most of the gulf coast is in this position. Since we are so far inland, the smaller hurricanes don't do much to us, but we haven't had a direct hit from a big one in my lifetime -- our weathermen have been saying we're long overdue for a couple of years now... :( We try to stay as prepared as we can, have meeting place set up with the rest of the family for when we evacuate, have camping equipment, can goods, etc., ready to go -- but how can you ever really be prepared to walk away from everything you own.

3. Me
Look at a map of the coastline of LA...find Vermilion Bay....that's the bay that I live on. If a major hurricane directly hits that bay, it will act as a funnel, and it is reported, that the storm surge will be in excess of 25 feet high and 25 miles inland...all the way thru Lafayette. Major devastation altho we are not as nearly as densely populated as New Orleans. We are at sea level. Am thinking of moving to Minnesota.

5. Pretty much any coastal areas.........
from Texas on north up to Maine on the east coast. Lots of small barrier islands have eroded away over the last 25 yrs and tons of money has been spent to try to prevent beach erosion.

8. I have no idea if we or my dad are at risk. Both towns are on the ocean
but we both of us have houses up on hills. I have no clue what the elevation of Castine or Deer Isle are, though.

10. I just googled. All I can see is that we are on bluffs, to which I said
NO DUH! But I couldn't see how high we actually are. If I have to I will email the Maritime Academy down the street. Surely they must know.
