A good time to read Howard Zinn

This is certainly as good a time as any to read Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present." He so beautifully and clearly lays out the history that has brought us to this day. It is highly readable and absorbing.

"For instance, there is the issue of class. It is pretended that, as in the Preamble to the Constitution, it is "we the people" who wrote that document, rather than fifty-five privileged white males whose class interest required a strong central government. That use of government for class purposes, to serve the needs of the wealthy and powerful, has continued throughout American history, down to the present day. It is disguised by language that suggests all of us-rich and poor and middle class-have a common interest."

Zinn also writes extensively of our shameful history of racism, so deeply ingrained in our history from the moment Columbus set foot in the Bahamas.

5. An interesting read along with...

his other book called "Voices of A People's History of the United States." This book is a collection of first-hand accounts, journal entries, speeches, personal letters, and published opinion pieces from the nation's history. It's interesting to read a chapter from "A People's History of the United States" and then read the corresponding chapter of essays in the "Voices" book.
