Since Ronald Reagan, Republicans have believed that pictures are what counts - no matter what the reporter is saying in the background. Operating on that premise, they sent Dubya down to New Orleans for a primetime speech to America. They managed to get enough electricity ( for a couple of hours) to light up the cathedral in the background and give the appearance of "things returning to normal". Of course, things were not returning to normal. The lights went out after Bush's speech.
But, more disturbing, was their idea that they could manipulate the American people even during this catastrophe. The blue lighting looked like something out of Disneyworld, with Bush standing in the cameras with his shirt looking like it was buttoned up wrong after they put on his bullet-proof vest, the idea that we wouldn't want to lose him. Who would make all the critical decisions? What will we ever do without him?
