How to argue for lower defense spending without sounding like a wimp
A lot of the DLC types say we have to be for more defense spending or we will sound wimpy.

That's a crock of shit. (and the people making it are probably corporate whores paid to say it anyway).

There's a couple of things you can do to prevent sounding cajones-impaired:

1. Point out that our recent wars haven't been about our defense but to profit a handful of businesses. Implied but unstated is if they disagree with you they are suckers. If they agree, they are fighting for themselves not somebody else.

2. As I do in the post to the Ann Coulter board below, point out the difference between defense and offense, and why we are unlikely to be invaded.

3. Tell them you understand their manhood is threatened. They put on a tie everyday, go sit in a cubicle and do a job that could be done by a ten year old girl. If they want to prove their manhood, they can go buy a bb gun and shoot squirrels instead of spending billions of our tax dollars to kill people who are no threat to us. Or better yet, give all these armchair warriors a gift cetificate to a paintball range, but let them shoot at each other with real guns. They won't learn anything, but there will be fewer of them to fuck up the world.

It's time to put up a defense regardless what the whiney, crying cowardly liberals think.

The key word there is DEFENSE. We could spend a hell of a lot less if we were only worried about DEFENSE.

Look at China. In terms of technology and amount of hardware, especially their navy, they are far behind us. Does that mean that we or Russia or India or anyone else is tempted to invade them? No. They are too big to occupy. It would be the same with Russia or us. What country wants to come hear where every third yahoo has a gun?

Additionally, the fact that we have thousands of nukes is enough to deter other countries from trying to invade us--countries that have only a handful of nukes aren't invaded by their neighbors.

What we really have is an OFFENSE budget, that's helping oil companies get their hands on the world's diminishing supply of petroleum.

A Marine Corps General who got two Medals of Honor said wars are rackets about making the rich richer and real defense doesn't require troops in every corner of the world and intervention every time an oil company exec, sweatshop or plantation owner gets their panties in a knot because the natives are driving a hard bargain for wages or natural resources.

what the DLC (and the repubs ) don't understand is that once you go bankrupt you won't be able to afford it... guess how close we are when China is financing our little adventure in Iraq?

Superpower? In their dreams. At this stage I think the Chinese are just feeding the addict, soon they will cut the supply and the reality will finally settle in.. we won't have money to afford bullets for the riffles we have, let alone the ones we might want.

2. Point to our actual Enemies.
I'm waiting. Still waiting.

The ephemeral "terrorist" is the new "Evil Empire of Russia" replacement. Convenient, as there is no central nation to fight.

The corporations eating America from the inside out, and their political cronies, are our enemies.

4. terrorist can be applied to anyone we don't like
It's like having a war on slapping or farting. Even if you kill everyone who does it, there will always be more.

There doesn't even have to be an ideological or logical connection between the so-called terrorists, like tying Iraq, Iran, and North Korea together, the axis of we don't like you.

5. You have to make the more muscular points before they'll hear that.
the conservative will whisper in their other ear, "he's just saying that because he's a PACIFIST, and wants to gut the military."

7. Simply Make A Reasonable Request -- Like This:
All I want is for us to bring our military spending to a level where it simply equals all the money spent on military operations by every ot her country on earth, combined. No more, and no less. It would save us billions!
