Should Cindy Sheehan be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize?
I was wondering what DUers think about it.

2. Bob Geldof should get it this year

Edit: Cindy should be nominated but Geldof is more deserving because of his over the last 25 years.

6. Cindy is great, BUT well I dunno...Nominate CHAVEZ, I say for Nobel...
reminds me of the case in which a cleaning lady or something was awarded an honorary PhD from Harvard.

Not that I have anything against cleaning ladies or soccer moms (I come from a LONG, long line of cleaning ladies, and frankly would have given my eye teeth to have HAD a soccer mom, or any kind of mom for that matter ;))

nor that I have anything against PhDs from Harvard

it's not that I don't think Cindy's accomplishments (or those of the cleaning lady) shouldn't be awarded--GENEROUSLY and PRESTIGIOUSLY-- I do however think the prize should be a better "fit". If Cindy's efforts were to actually lead to the withdrawal of troops and the cessation of the Iraq war, I might feel differently about it, but .... hey folks, the war is still on.

(similarly, if the cleaning lady had done anything of ACADEMIC merit, I'd have had no problem w a Harvard PhD as recognition, as I recall, she succeeded in amassing a lot of money and donating it to the poor. Great, but not an academic achievement), so...I don't know, what Cindy has done so far just doesn't feel like Nobel material to me.

In both these cases, I might have suggested the ALTERNATIVE Nobel Prize, otherwise known as the Right Livelihood Award, which is more appropriate, and also MORE REALISTIC because anyone can nominate. That means someone here could get the ball rolling.... here's the URL. I say GOFERIT.

7. You have a very valid point, but considering that Karl Rove
called her a clown, it seems to me that her getting this kind of recognition might be helpful in getting our country back on track.

8. what's wrong with the right livelihood award by way of recognition?
some would contend it's actually better precisely b/c less tied to political connections (ie cronyism and or traditional forms of "acknowledgement")

Do you know about the right livelihood award?

Did you even bother to look at the link I posted?

Is this question just an academic exercise (i mean the thread question), or is it about looking for REALISTIC ways to acknowledge Cindy's accomplishments?

In the case of the former: Gee, that was fun. Next.

In the case of the latter: How bout looking into the possibility of nominating her for the Right Livelihood Award?

11. I'm not sure that's possible, but be REALISTIC people

I don't know that she'd even have the "cred" for the Right Livelihood Award.

But the folks in Sweden would look at you like: wow, those Americans again. Stuck on their own navel.

Again, if the Camp Casey movement would actually produce the RESULT of withdrawal, it would be a different story, but, in the eyes of the rest of the world, I do NOT believe that Cindy has done enough to merit a Nobel, as much as I appreciate the sentiment
