Three post speech polls have Bush's numbers sinking
Sorry Karl, next time make sure you button his shirt...

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/19/bush.poll/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Bush approval rating at 40 percent
Majority disapprove of the handling of Katrina, Iraq

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's vow to rebuild the Gulf Coast did little to help his standing with the public, only 40 percent of whom now approve of his performance in office, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday.

Just 41 percent of the 818 adults polled between Friday and Monday said they approved of Bush's handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, while 57 percent disapproved.

And support for his management of the war in Iraq has dropped to 32 percent, with 67 percent telling pollsters they disapproved of how Bush is prosecuting the conflict.

...

Fifty-nine percent said they considered the 2003 invasion of Iraq a mistake, 63 percent said they wanted to see some or all U.S. troops withdrawn from that country and 54 percent told pollsters they favor cutting spending on the war to pay for disaster relief.

Here's Gallup's spin:

Bush Gets Negative Views for Handling the Hurricane
Fewer rate him as a strong and decisive leader

Although a majority of Americans disapprove of George W. Bush's handling of the response to Hurricane Katrina, most of the more general views of the president have not changed in recent weeks. His pre- and post-hurricane aftermath overall job approval rating and approval ratings on specific issues are essentially the same. After the hurricane, however, fewer Americans say Bush is a strong and decisive leader, a dimension on which he has typically scored well.

BREAKING: Bush’s Ratings Drop After Speech
This just in from Rasmussen Reports:

Thirty-five percent (35%) of Americans now say that President Bush has done a good or excellent job responding to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. That’s down from 39% before his speech from New Orleans.

The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows that 41% give the President poor marks for handling the crisis, that’s up from 37% before the speech.

Katrina Pushes Bush Down Further
A new Survey USA tracking poll suggests a "can't win" dynamic is unfolding for President Bush as he struggles to deal with the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina.

"The number of Americans who now approve of the President's response to Hurricane Katrina is down: 40% today compared to 42% before he announced the Gulf Opportunity Zone" in a speech last week. "The number of Americans who disapprove of the President's response to Katrina is up: 56% today compared to 52% before the speech."

Key point: "The more cash President Bush throws on the fire, as compensation for what some see as an inadequate initial response, the more it antagonizes his core supporters."

2. Thanks for posting this!
And if he's at 40 percent in CNN/Gallup, I predict we'll see other national polls with him under 40 percent very soon.

4. He's finally gone over the cliff...
The last scrap of hope for Bush's continued occupation of the White House was the belief of many that he is strong and decisive. Now that's gone too, along with the last traces of credibility. Now anything he says will just piss people off and drop his numbers deeper into the flood waters. Everybody assumes that if his lips are moving he's lying, so it no longer matters how "great" Rove's words are.

I think phrases like "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job" have been etched into people's minds permanently.

1000 people, and if the trend is going in *'s favor, they usually pole almost 1500.

19. the beauty is, the harder he tries, the more transparent he becomes.
and on and on, and so forth and so forth.

He (and his panty-waisted political brain rust) do not realize that simply showing up and throwing money at a problem will automatically translate into:
"My he cares, and what a great thin, fit, exercised leader we have again."

What they forgot to consider and put into their little PR-BS-spin calculator was that America has been burned not once, not twice, not three times, but many times by these yahoos. It is not simply the lack of WMD, the obvious lack of planning in a post-invasion Iraq, the pesky problem of Osama and all of those #3 AQ aides they somehow find, then eventually release because of their own blunders. America is a forgiving nation. We forgave Nixon. LBJ. Reagan. Clinton. Our nation even forgave this president, and temporarily accepted his explanations and make-believe excuses. But burn us badly and enough times, and we begin to take it personally. We have more than reached that point as a people. Their spin has over-saturated the american psyche no less than Katrina saturated NOLA.

They don't recognize that with each trip, they look worse and worse. Once they do, they will find Shrub at the 30% level or so. Only then will they review their approach, but it will be too late.

23. Was there a specific question asked concerning *'s speech itself?
Something like, "Were you satisfied with the president's speech?" or "How effective was the speech?" or "Does a haunted house in a scary blue light help you feel the president is in control of things?"

I'd like to think that the speech itself was the primary reason for the drop in approval numbers because it was specifically intended to boost them; so we'd see a correlation between cause and effect. I'd also like to think that the Democrats have a mole at the highest levels of the White House political planning arm who's trusted to get Leader out of jams, and that he/she got away with this blunder and will go on to greater ones.

27. 32% for Nixon, just before he was driven from office.
One has to go back to Harry Truman, who had similiarly low levels, except Mr. Truman's numbers reflected his decision to save the United States.

George's numbers come from destroying the United States.

According to an analysis posted on the Gallup Web site in mid-November, Bush's current 53 percent approval rating "is actually the lowest of any of the last seven presidents who won a second term in the first poll conducted after their re-election." Right after securing their second terms, Bill Clinton received a 58 percent approval rating, Ronald Reagan 61 percent, Richard Nixon 62 percent, Lyndon Johnson 70 percent, Dwight Eisenhower 75 percent, and Harry Truman 69 percent.

Not only is Bush's 50 percent approval rating dismal for a two-term president, it's arguably the worst for any president about to be sworn into office. The only other modern-day president with such shaky approval ratings immediately following an election win was Reagan. According to a January 1981 Gallup poll, his job approval rating stood at just 51 percent. (Since Gallup began polling in 1937, Bush and Reagan are the only two presidents to take office with job approval ratings that low.) The difference between Reagan and Bush, though, was that Reagan's disapproval rating at the time was just 13 percent. Today, Bush's negative rating hovers in the 40s. "His high disapproval numbers are astonishing," says Shenkman...
