Cindy Sheehan rally members arrested? (2 reports!)
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 03:42 PM by The Witch
Can anyone confirm this report from Kos?

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/9/19/154239/638

EDIT: 2nd report

http://nyc.indymedia.org/en/2005/09/57261.html

EDIT: This just in from a Kos poster:

CINDY not arrested. camp casey ny organizer ZOOL a (none / 0)

just went down there and talked to a few people who are still there. No one connected to cindy is there atm but the several people I talked to all say cindys people grabbed her as the police moved in and shuffled her off.

she spoke for 2 minutes and exactly as she was finishing a group of police who had been waiting behind her moved in and grabbed the events organizer, a guy called Zool(sp?)

He yelled 'I'm being arrested, I'm being arrested'.
Cindy stepped or was moved aside by people travelling with her and quickly taked away from Union square BY HER OWN PEOPLE.

Again I have no names but this is the recollecion of several people now at the camp casey tent in Union Square.

One woman said Cindy has another speaking engangement tonight and that seems to be moving forward as planned.

11. The time to REVOLT is coming nearer.
To see These KGB tactics being used in our everyday life is absurd. If "We the People" do not speak out now it is only going to get worse.:grr:

20. Keep it peaceful.
There is nothing some people would like more than an excuse to bash heads and treat protestors as dangerous hoodlums. Give them violence, and they will pre-emptively shut down future protests.

Don't provide them with the excuse.

5. Reportedly, Cindy herself not arrested but rally broken up
The New York City Police Department forcibly broke up this afternoon's rally for Cindy Sheehan, moving in as Cindy was speaking at about 3 p.m. in Union Square. The rally had been underway for about an hour, and was about to conclude as Cindy spoke following several other speakers, including a few who are traveling with her on her caravan.

As Cindy was speaking, a large platoon of police massed behind from the interior of the park, then formed a circle behind her, the speakers' area and a few dozen people who were deployed in an arc behind her. Overall, about 200 people were in attendance, with the crowd steadily increasing in size as the rally progressed. As the police formed their arc just behind, the men and women immediately behind Cindy linked arms. A captain made a cutting motion at his throat, signalling he wanted no more free speech. He waited about 30 seconds, then the police moved in. They didn't dare arrest Cindy, but they immediately moved in and grabbed zool, the event's organizer and one of the main organizers of Camp Casey-NYC, pulling him away and arresting him. I do not believe anyone else was arrested; at least I didn't see any other arrests. I was nearby, and there was no hesitation on the part of the police in specifically targetting zool.

The police also took the microphone and sound system. The crowd shouted "Shame! Shame!" at the police and asked what they were so afrraid of, but made no response. There was a moderate press presence, even a bit of corporate media there, although the only television crew covering the rally was RTV from Russia.

No warning of any kind was given, and this was a permitted rally. Other than the captain making his cut motion, 30 seconds before forcibly breaking up the rally, there was no warning, verbal or in any other fashion. The police had massed perhaps three or four minutes before moving in. Until then, the rally had gone smoothly, starting just after 2 p.m. as scheduled. Cindy and the rest of the caravan arrived sometime after 2:30; the rest of the rally was comprised of speakers from the caravan. Many groups were in attendence besides Camp Casey-NYC, including Military Families Speak Out, Gold Star Families for Peace, the Troops Out Now Coalition, the No Police State Coalition and the Green Party, among others.

40. Kick Help Sen. Leahy and other true Democrats to Block Roberts
Can you imagine the SUPREME COURT with this bush toady on it, how many more illegal actions will be condoned and will make Fitzgerald's job more difficult WHEN HE FINALLY SENDS THE FEDERAL MARSHALLS TO ARREST THE BUSH REGIME.
We the people of the United States hereby call for a NATIONAL REFERENDUM, by email, by phone call, by fax, and by letter, on the choice of a new chief justice for our Supreme Court.

We are presented with a pleasant, smiley face who so far has refused to answer questions about whether he agrees with the holdings in cases upon which we have long relied, which we have a right to know, and who has refused to deliver for examination any of his memos for the last 20 years, which we have a right to see.

The now most unpopular second term president in history does NOT have the carte blanche to appoint any crony ideologue of his own choosing, and we are deeply suspicious of the motives of this particular nominee, who cannot even tell the truth about his leadership role in the reactionary Federalist Society. We therefore call on our senators to DEMAND a different and more forthcoming nominee who better represents the mainstream of the American people.

The one click form on this page will send your personal message to both of your senators, and also the senate judiciary committee as well, with the subject "I demand rejection of John Roberts, by filibuster if necessary." At the same time you can send your personal comments only as a letter to the editor of your nearest local daily newspaper if you like. Read our simple, comprehensive plan HOW we're going to stop Roberts.

http://www.nocrony.com/

SUBMIT THIS ACTION FORM TO CONTACT BOTH YOUR SENATORS & YOUR LOCAL PAPER AT ONCE:

We are tired of our civil liberties being destroyed by the never-elected Bush Regime. The mass murder in NOLA must lead to the Arrest of bush and his regime and if bush is allowed to place ANOTHER OF HIS CRONIES in a position of power, it will make Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald's and his Grand Juries' work in investigating and handing down indictments for the bush regime treason against the citizens of the United States much harder if there is another corrupt Supreme Court judge. The American people need a say in this nomination of a judge who does not respect the law enough to provide his record to the Congress when repeatedly requested. This indicates the type of corruption we can expect of Roberts if we allow this "fixing" of our justice system.

9. Even if she were arrested, no biggie...
If it was simply a matter of permits, she'd be RORed in a matter of hours. No worries. If you're involved in the antiwar movement for long, you will eventually be arrested. Especially if you're someone like her. It's just intimidation, nothing more.
Sincerely,
A man with a long rap sheet filled with bogus charges -- and, admittedly, a couple legit ones

17. As stated in my previous post, yes --
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 03:42 PM by SteppingRazor
I've been arrested six times, actually.
Charged five times -- twice for trespassing, once for inhibiting, once for assault, and once for -- ahem -- DUI
Assault charge was dropped, pled out the other three protest-related charges.
Nolo contendre to the DUI.

On edit: Why do you ask? I don't think it's really hypocritical to comment on arrest procedure if you haven't been arrested. I think anyone who knows something about the process has every right to comment, not just those who have been in the system.

of emotion for the march on the 24th....

The anti-war movement will (rightfully ) be inflamed by this and the authorities will be on edge...

It's getting to be more like 1968 everyday.

21. No. They only raised THEIR level.
If they become violent, but the protestors do not, then the contrast only becomes clearer. If they are determined to act as monsters, then they defeat themselves.

However, if the Sept 24th protests can be seen as both massive AND peaceful, you win.

So show up en masse. Keep your cool. That's your winning move.

that's always dangerous.

To the cops, the Bill of Rights aint worth shit...no better than toilet paper. I have totally lost faith in what USA is all about. Warning: Keep squeezing the First Amendment out of people. And, they will resort to the Second Amendment.

37. Ferrer can make a comeback after his stupid Amadou Diallo remark
about the cops not having committed a crime. Well, arresting Cindy may not be a criminal act, but it is another sign of NYPD's being out of control regarding peaceful assemblies with permits. Yes, perhaps some regulation or another was violated in a minor way, but talk about throwing out the baby with the bath water or not seeing the forest for the trees.

This is like arresting that 9-year-old girl in the DC Metro for eating a french fry. What a fiasco!
