Gee, where did I get the idea for my bumper sticker???? That is right, it is from Friendly Fascism: The New Face of Power in America by Bertram Gross

Has anyone read any of these books? If so, what were your thoughts? I would love to hear them.

4. Read "Friendly Fascism" when it was published in the early '80s. . .

I just pulled it from my library. Give me some time to reacquaint myself with the particulars and I'll give my comments then. I believe you'll find it somewhat different from current opinions bandied about and far more disturbing in its conclusions.

You may want to temper those conclusions with some judicious readings from Hannah Arendt, to keep the overactive fears in check.

5. I just recommended to my freeper brother in law

2 books: Against All Enemies by Richard Clarke and The History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. Also, The Age of Sacred Terror whose authors names I forget, but it was a great book.

My b.i.l. is a lawyer who said he knew nothing about the Peloponnesian War. I told him that it was a paradigm for our invasion of Iraq and how Athens lost both its empire and its democracy during it and how chilling it was to compare our situation today.

Being a freeper he didn't want to hear about the Clarke book. But he did seem interested in The Age of Sacred Terror.

We'll see what happens...

6. Age of Sacred Terror

Is by Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon. I started it a while back, but have finished about 4 others since then.

I just finished "Sneaking into the Flying Circus" by Alexandra Pelosi. Pretty good with a good insight into presidential campaigns. And last night I just cracked open "Conspiracy of Fools".

7. Two Out of Three...

Michael Lind is a Texan and former rightwinger who, like David Brock, simply got fed up. "Up From Conservatism" is his account of that journey, and it's trenchant and witty. His best book, though, is *The Next American Nation*, a bit dated but still on-target most of the time.
Barbara Honegger...hmm. Unfortunately, she seems to be channeling in from another solar system most of the time. If you're really interested in the "October Surprise", Gary Sick's *October Surprise* or Robert parry's *Trick or Treason* are the best sources. Haven't read *Friendly Fascism*.
