UK soldiers 'storm' Basra prison

British forces have rescued two UK servicemen who were arrested by Iraqi police in the southern city of Basra.

Official Iraqi sources say British tanks stormed the city's jail, but the Ministry of Defence says the men's release was negotiated. Basra governor Mohammed al-Waili said it was a "barbaric act of aggression".

The arrests sparked clashes in which UK tanks came under attack. Two civilians were reportedly killed and three UK soldiers were injured.

British servicemen who were seen being injured in the graphic photographs are being treated for minor injuries only MoD officials insist they have been talking to the Iraqi authorities to secure the release of the men - who were reported to be working undercover.

But they do acknowledge a wall was demolished as UK forces tried to "collect" the men Iraqi police accused of firing on them.

==============================

This is a really odd one folks. I think the Brits just got caught inpersonating Al Qaeda in Iraq and the insurgents. They appear to be attacking those we claim to be protecting. Stirring the pot.

Do they actually WANT civil war?

1. BBC news showed a soldier getting out
But then being beaten by the crowd. The burning pics didn't look good but the report was indeed just "minor injuries".

5. Yeah, looked bad. Maybe they're trying to use a Rove play and...
...deny everything. EVERYTHING.

What folly.

4. It sure looks that way to observers. Esp. in car w/explosives.
Any time you have two unlawful combatants driving around in a car packed with explosives, my Shenanigan-O-Meter can't help but register at least a tiny bump.

If their own military is trying to stir up violence against the Iraqi government they themselves have erected then I dare say madness has not been contained to the New Colonies.

16. we need to pull out/we do not know what is going on there
I personally thought it very strange that NO-ONE has been beheaded since
Bush was reelected, back in 2004, there was about 1 a month and since November, bingo, no more & it's even more unstable now that it
was last year. We do not know what is being done in our name, the photos from US run Iraqi prisons are so awful that we cannot see them
and now this. Plus a US military official in Pakistan is saying that
Osama is very ill, to me that means they know where he is.
