Good Things About the South
Since many DUers still have an 1860s perception of what the South is like in 2003, I thought I might post (in vain) some GOOD things about the South.

1)Liberal Talk Radio: IE america is based in and founded by natives of San Francisco. No, silly, it's Atlanta.

2)The Southern Christian Leadership Conference- Organization which spearheaded the Civil Rights movement, now run by MLK III.

3)Nobel Peace Prize-Winners - Only 2 Baptists have won peace prizes, Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Jimmy Carter.

4)11 Democratic Presidents, who have contributed:

Disestablishment of the Anglican Church
The Monroe Doctrine
The League of Nations, prototype for U.N.
The Great Society
The Department of Education
The Camp David Accords
The Panama Canal Treaty
...and some good things that Clinton probably did.

5) Blues, Jazz, Country, and Rock. We are not responsible for the creation of pop music.

6) No doubt there will still be cries on this board of "Oh, the wingnuts, the wingnuts!" And sure some do exist. But what famous wingnuts do you speak of? These?

Mike Malloy, Jim Hightower, Ted Turner,James Carville, Paul Begala, Willie Nelson, Dixie Chicks, REM, etc. Oh yeah, and Will Pitt.

Or perhaps these:

Sean Hannity- California
Rush- New York
Bushes- Maine/Connecticut
Ashcroft- Missouri
Cheney- Wyoming?
Carlson- California
O'Reilly- The Westbury section of Levittown, Massachusetts
James Dobson- Colorado

The only one I can think of that people may be referring to is Falwell, who is from a portion of Virginia. Number of people I have met in my lifetime who like Falwell: 1

So there you have it. Some good things about the South in 2003.

3. I think it's worth mentioning that Bush is not a Texan.
He was born in Connecticut; he attended New England boarding schools; his father was from Massachusetts; his grandparents were originally from Indiana; he pronounces "rather" like a New Englander.

5. Levittowns
There are several Levittowns in the US. Mr. Levitt was a developer of tract housing after WW2. I believe there is one in Penn., Maryland, NY, Mass., and NJ.

The south also has the first state supported college (UNC or UGa. depending on if you define by first classes or first charter).

We also know that BBQ is a noun not a verb (you eat BBQ, you have cookouts)

The first Declaration of Independence was signed in Mecklenburg County, NC. A full year before the other one.
