A massive hurricane slammed into Galveston, Texas. A tidal surge of some four feet in as many seconds inundated the city, while the wind destroyed thousands of buildings. By the time the water and winds subsided, entire streets had disappeared and as many as 10,000 were dead making this the worst natural disaster in America's history.

Among the dead were 90 children and 10 Catholic Sisters at St. Mary's Orphanage.
In the first floor chapel, they tried to calm the children by having them sing "Queen of the Waves”. Queen of the Waves, is an old French hymn traditionally sung by sailors during storms. The waters continued to rise The sisters cut the clothesline rope into sections and used it to tie the children to the cinctures which they wore around their waists. Each Sister tied to herself between six to eight children. They resumed singing together until the building came apart. Only three boys from the orphanage survived: William Murney, Frank Madera and Albert Campbell. Miraculously all three ended up together in a tree in the water. One of the boys remembered a sister tightly holding two small children in her arms, promising not to let go. The sisters were buried wherever they were found, with the children still attached to them. Two of the sisters were found together across the bay on the Mainland. One of them was tightly holding two small children in her arms. Even in death she had kept her promise not to let go.

Building the Seawall & raising the grade of the city behind it helped protect the city of Galveston. But it's grown beyond that area. I don't blame any Galvestonians for getting out NOW--evacuating an island is not easy.

The low-lying areas around Galveston Bay share the risk of storm surge. Guess where most of the petrochemical industry is located?

Houston, itself, is not as vulnerable as New Orleans. Our many floods drain pretty quickly. Hurricane winds do not cause the total devastation caused by storm surge. The winds DO take power lines down; some of our utility crews may be heading back West. (But we have "deals" with power companies in other parts of the country.)

I agree with other folks here -- there are lots of good folks in Texas, and even if they were not "good folks" I wouldn't wish Rita or any other natural disaster on them. I lived in Texas in the mid-70's (Cow Town, aka Ft. Worth), and met lots of great people. And i visited Galveston, which I fell in love with.

I just hope to hell that Rita will somehow lose, rather than gain, strength, but with the warm waters in the Gulf, it may be a fruitless hope. I just can't stand the thought of anyone going through the Katrina-level damage, or the folks in LA and MS going through it AGAIN!

My house is 75 years old and in the Heights area, I worry for the people in the areas that flood.

We had a tropical storm 4 years ago without high winds that caused a hugh amount of damage due to flooding. I am getting ready and hoping for the best.
