Someone sent me those photos weeks before Katrina hit. Sorry. They've been making the rounds for a while - and that's not how hurricanes look. Those are various clouds, some of them wall clouds. The one with the funnel is the formation of a tornado.

28. Come on, be nice
Those of us who may have thought they were of Katrina (orignially) have been educated by those who knew whey were not. I think most of us want to know the truth, and are open to being corrected when necessary. I know now they are not pictures of Katrina, but that doesn't mean I'm retarded.

And please, don't degrade those among the human race that are mentally disabled.

46. no, I won't be nice, because this points to a much larger problem...
...increasingly here at DU, which is "post first, research later."

In the case of these photos, it's dumb, but harmless. (It would only take a minute to check on snopes to see if the photos were a hoax or not.)

What irks me, though, is that there is way too much rumor mongering around here. Thousands of fellow citizens use DU as a primary source of information, and we're all doing each other a serious disservice when we post unsubstantiated rumors as fact.

Is your post meant to imply that those of us who orignially thought they were of Katrina are stupid? If that's not what you meant, then I apologize right now. But it seems to me that there are folks here who don't want to give anyone any room for making a mistake, for posting an opposing viewpoint, etc.

Got news for you: none of us are perfect. As I said in an earlier post on this thread, I first thought that the pictures WERE of Katrina, but when it was pointed out to me, with "evidence", that they were instead pictures of a tornado, I was fine with the correction, and it seems some others are as well.

So please, tell me why these pictures are "bullshit". Do you demand that everyone one in your life does everything perfectly? I hope not.

Sorry, not trying to diss you, but I really want to know why you had this "bullshit" response.

33. I'm recommending because they are awesome, but not of a hurricane
This is far too small - it's obviously a violent storm that is spawning tornadoes over a local area. Katrina spread over multiple states and its eyewall was well over a hundred miles from the outer feeder bands. It would not have looked like this. Absolutely stunning photography; it's rare to capture a newly spawned tornado this way and the lighting is spectactular. Those curving bands of clouds must have been moving very fast - it took courage/foolhardiness to stand there taking photos. There are many storm-chasers - both professional and hobbyists - who do just that, and they would be thrilled to bag what this photographer has.

41. You should really edit your subject line now, since
the photos have been debunked. Otherwise, they'll end up being sent on from here as photos of Katrina.

Hurricanes are thousands of times larger than these storms. These are wall clouds, which tornadoes have been known to develop from. They are small change in size compared to even a Cat 1 hurricane.

I can understand why the error was made, but why is the thread still headed with the subject line that these photos are of Katrina?

48. Well, this certainly makes me look like a complete fool...or does it?
I wrote the above post (#21) before anybody else had responded to the pictures. But because I was thinking about what I might suggest that could help the photographer market the work, I didn't put my post up on this thread until I had e-mailed the link to my friends. Thus I hadn't seen the other posts and didn't know I was the victim of a hoax. As so often is the case, no good intention goes unpunished: my punishment the damning but wholly false appearance I was heedlessly babbling on in stupefied enthusiasm -- stubbornly ignoring the fact the hoax had already been revealed by Nadinbrzezinski (to whom my heartfelt thanks).

Thus I was mortified (and not a little hurt) when I read the remainder of the thread -- the 20 comments I suddenly discovered had preceded mine. Even so, my vexation with the hoax's perpetrator is minor compared to my contempt for the poster who called me (and others like me) "basically retarded."

What I assumed we were looking at was not the whole hurricane, which I think all of us know was far too huge to fit into such photographs, but rather the leading edge of the hurricane's weather system, which (depending on the conditions it is displacing) can indeed breed the sort of spectacular scenes shown in the pictures. I have seen such episodes myself: huge frontal systems from the west invading the Pacific Northwest coast (though never anything quite so monumentally powerful as in these pictures). The OP, an Alaska resident, has no doubt also witnessed such scenes -- and was therefore all the more easily taken in.

I suspect others made similar assumptions: that these photographs were various views of the oncoming storm-front, a sequence photographed over a considerable distance (as from a speeding vehicle), the work ending after a tornado finally put its foot down in the last image. This assumption was made all the more plausible by newscasters' oft-repeated descriptions of tornadic storms and other such activity as typical of the hurricane's approach.

To call our gullibility "basically retarded" therefore reflects both a limited knowledge of nature and a truly breathtaking ignorance of the human thought-process -- an ignorance that is contemptible in its lack of empathy, repugnant in the offhanded haughtiness of its elitist scorn, and offensive in its malicious belittlement of those of us who were (very understandably) taken in by an exceptionally clever hoax.

Poeple are just jerks. What can you do.

I knew these weren't Katrina photos because I read snopes every day.

But so what. There have been some posts here that were so outrageous that the posters would deserve a little chastisement for not checking their facts first.

But this is not such a case. There was no obvious tipoff that these were fakes and not connected to Katrina.

55. Beautiful Photoshopping, but definitely not Katrina
Hurricanes do not look like that coming in. When a hurricane comes in, first there's high, thin clouds, then the clouds thicken and lower, then some drizzle, drizzle turns to rain and the whole time the wind picks up. Actually, an approaching hurricane can be quite innocent and benign looking. Then the wind picks up and the rain starts.

These pics are not from Katrina. My guess is they're somewhere in the mid-West with some of approaching cold fronts, others of approaching summer thunderstorms off the Rockies.

62. You never see the hurricane generated tornadoes
because they're usually blended in with the driving rain. Tornadoes from hurricanes don't look the same as in the mid-West where these pics were obviously taken.

Another tipoff to me that these are not from Katrina is that there are o pine trees in the pics.
