Boston Globe in reporting on Kerry's speech @ Brown says that
Kerry said in an interview "''The moment is here," he said, acknowledging that he had ''held back" for almost year, both to give Bush a chance to govern and avoid any impression of sour grapes. Now, he said, he realized it's ''time to go out and tell the truth."

The second page of the article gives a sense of the response by the students and "behind the scene" feel http://www.boston.com/news/weather/articles/2005/09/20/in_college_speech_kerry_upbraids_bush_administration/?page=2

On the first page of the article the Globe says it is a major shift in tone that resembles Dean"s campaign

2. It is liberating to lose and free yourself from DC spinmeisters
ask Gore

I do wish Kerry had shown a sample of this last year

4. And if he had, would the Corporate owned media have given him
means to get his words out? Or would they have torn him to shreds even more then they did? I think we all know the answer to that.

19. Well, they did not - this is the local newspaper reporting on our junior
senator. Most other papers oppose Edwards and Kerry in a typical RW media crap, as if they needed to be opposed.

Did you see him on TV?

we still continue to beat them up? That's helpful.

33. You missed IranContra, BCCI, illegal wars in Central America, drugrunning
by CIA, gays in the military, Kyoto, failures at Tora Bora?

Where were YOU and most other Democratic citizens? Were you backing up Kerry on ANY of this? Were YOU doing anything about it?

3. You can never make up for a lack of first response
Apparently a lesson to be learned by all the S&B boys.

John, John, your frat buddy had FOUR years to demonstrate his governing. We've had time to ferment and use as sacrament the wine of our bitterness.

Holding back to give Bush a chance for more misgovernment is not what the opposition party leadership should be doing.

28. READ - he didn't say he held back in campaign - he's saying POST election
he gave Bush SOME room to govern.

Sorry, but nowhere in the article does Kerry say that he went easy on Bush during the campaign.

He didn't. The media just happened to edit out most of Kerry's most blistering attacks on Bush and the GOP.

70. If you didn't watch CSPAN in 2004, you didn't see JFK's campaign.
end of story (but I'll go on).

Our journamalists doled out "fair"-sized soundbites on the evening news that gave the impression that both candidates scored similar rhetorical points in their stump speeches and other scheduled appearances. Those who actually heard the speechs could tell right off the bat who was actually connecting, and who was playing to a hand picked crowd (and often not even a crowd.)

Blame who you like, but I blame, mostly, the shitty media for screwing Kerry. He kicked ass, but few reported it.

Until the debates, of course, the one and only time when the candidates had to fend for themselves. But not to worry, the media spun those for Bush so's not to make him look too much a fool.

And, yes, Senator Kerry has been ignored by the M$M. I'm with you. You would think that many 'Democrats' would be smart enough to figure that out, but, no. Many 'Democrats' have to jump down his throat for not speaking out or acting. Apparently, he is supposed to call each and every one of them on the phone, personally, when he says or does something. :eyes:

He did. In fact, during Tora Bora, Kerry was the ONLY Democrat confronting Bush on his failures....most others supported Bush over Kerry.

I think too many stick with the corporate media's interpretation of the Democrats and their efforts.

They have yet to report honestly on any Democrat or their initiatives or on the Bush failures over the years.

quit running for President now and try doing something good in the Senate for the people who managed to elect him. It makes him look rather ridiculous that the only time he wasn't posturing against Bush was when it counted, during the 2004 campaign.

How about paying attention to the gap between Senator Kerry's words and his actions?

What about voting for the IWR and then turning around and criticizing the guy he gave authority to prosecute it? Did he think that he was handing it over to FDR or something?

What about all but totally ignoring the voting irregularities in the '04 election?

What about the constant inability to articulate the simple fact that he was fooled by a lying administration on Iraq?

"John Kerry's attacks on President Bush's efforts to assist the victims and rebuild the Gulf Coast don't come as a surprise _ armchair quarterbacking on tough issues has never been a problem for Senator Kerry," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, in a statement.

Pretty hard to refute, isn't it? Kerry has been straddling the fence and saying I told you so after the fact since he got back from Nam.

For a start, read Kerry's speech when he voted the IWR. Read his speeches during the campaign.

If we have to refute every blurb that Schmitt says, it will take all our times. Believe them if you want.

And only stupid people do not change their mind. Bush is one.

I wonder if he read the resolution. It basically states that while it would be nice to continue going the diplomatic route, the President has full authority to use the armed forces in Iraq. His speech was full of conditions that weren't in the resolution.

And you're still being pretty nasty about it. We're all Democrats here.

I wonder if people ever get tired of defending Kerry. He had every opportunity to defend himself last fall, and he failed.

media's ASS with their disciplined message on a daily basis....even though that message was one big lie.

Left leaning and objective media couldn't handle the onslaught of the RW media machine.

Did DU really get its ass kicked by Free Republic last year or was Free Republic and other RW forums treated as a more legitimate source by the corporate media?

Did the RNC beat the DNC in its organizational matchup?

57. Honestly, I'm not sure.
I think the tide is turning...liberal media is starting to make some gains in the way things are being portrayed, and it seems like the party elites are starting to put a lot of money into building alternatives. I actually love Current. I encourage everyone to check it out.

As far as the RNC and the DNC, I'd say that it is possible that the RNC was better organized. I still hold the vote totals suspect, but I think their databases and outreach efforts were still very effective. The DNC had it kinda easy in a way, because anyone who ever had a liberal thought in their life wanted to come out of woodwork to beat the crazy man in the White House. I credit the RNC with getting their people to the polls, even if I question the totals.

campaign is never just one person.

There are alot of levels in this day and age, and we all are matched up to some degree.

And in the most obvious matchup, the debates, Kerry won DECISIVELY.

At every other level of matchup, the control by the GOP of the corporate media and the voting machines rendered every one of OUR matchups as a cakewalk for the GOP...and they did so INTENTIONALLY.

Kerry didn't lose to Bush any more than DU lost to Free Republic. The difference was in how the media presented both.

I'll give Kerry credit on his investigations of BCCI and Iran Contra. Ultimately though, he failed to make it stick where it counted. I don't know if it's just a good deal of caution when dealing with the Bushes or what, and that would be smart.

But the common thread with that and the election was an abundance of caution, a refusal to say what was really on his mind, and a failure to get what he really wanted. I think Kerry has a lot of potential, but he hasn't been very effective at seeing these things through to fruition.

And I don't have any favorite politicians. The closest I can think of died in a plane crash three years ago.

Hell, I live in the District, so I don't really even have any meaningful national representatives.

There's nothing more lame than someone deciding to say what they meant to say a year ago, though. A more compelling speech would be, "I blew it. I should have called that Connecticut pantywaist a fake and a liar last year when I had the chance."

For whatever reason, he can't do that, and it doesn't engender my respect.

or "a fake and a liar" either. Democrats are civil men who believe in civil discourse. Unfortunately the GOP has bred a pack of uncivil asses over the last generation.

The only caution you saw in the campaign was from a corporate media on guard to keep Bush propped up and so edit out most of Kerry's most bruising remarks about Bush. You heard them on Cspan or live at a rally, but they would go missing in the news reports later that day or on alll the news shows afterwards.

61. You are right there.
They really did give Kerry a dearth of coverage. That was one of the most depressing parts of it. When he finally got on TV in the debates, he was great, and the public saw it. That was pretty much the only time he got.

And I was exaggerating about the Connecticut pantywaist thing. But I do think it was important to portray Bush as being different from his image. He is not the brush clearing cowboy he pretends to be.

If they are going to knock Kerry for windsurfing (which honestly, with that, the motorcycle, etc...did look kinda silly for a man his age), the least he could do is mention that Bush's ranch has no horses. He could have even zinged him as being all hat and no cattle. It never happened.

71. Geez, I'll be working in New Hampshire to get votes for him
Nice to know we'll have some spirited opposition. Looking forward to it, my dear.

73. I busted my ass volunteering for him before the election
Forgive me if I am pissed about his early concession despite the overwhelming evidence of voting irregularities.

I am also pissed at how he allowed bush to accuse him of being unpatriotic. You had a draft dodger accussing a war hero of being unpatriotic and the challenges went uncontested.

Yeah, I know Kerry thought he was taking the higher road, but if he had any idea how the average American thinks, he would have realized that was a losing strategy.

So now that he is coming out a year later and criticizing the bush administration, I really don't give a shit. In times like these, we need a politician who is willing to stand up and fight for what is right instead of somebody backing down to "avoid any impression of sour grapes".

And the article states he is changing his tone to that of Howard Dean.

Shit, just give me Howard Dean. At least we know where he's coming from. At least he speaks from the heart.

76. Again, I don't really care

I like the guy. I will work for him in New Hampshire. Nothing you have said has convinced me otherwise. I will give him, my time, money and effort.

I assume you will do likewise with the person you like. See you at the ballot box.

79. I wasn't trying to convert you
I was just stating my opinion. If Kerry wins the democratic ticket, I will vote for him again.

35. Kerry could have posted on DU
Al Gore could have also. Elizabeth Edwards did, when she had breast cancer. We have held each other up for years here, when it was all bad all the time, and it would have been nice to hear from John.

63. True, but it wouldn't have gone over very well
Many posters here would have been jumping down his throat. We eat our own and, oh, wouldn't that have played well in the M$M. They would've printed those interactions all over the country. Flush and Faux would've swooned in ecstacy.

People here would only be happy if a candidate addressed each and every single one of their personal concerns and that will never happen. It is simply not possible. If a candidate doesn't, he doesn't have "depth." If he tries (or gets into details), he's "wordy and boring." :eyes:

80. As a die-hard Kerry critic...
... I offer my congratulations. And my hopes that he will now go out and say what needs to be said.

The nation is WAITING for some one to step up and say things that validate their own creeping suspicions about this administration.

That person can emerge as a leader. Kerry is not my favorite Dem, but he could become so in a hurry if he'll get out there and SPEAK TO THE MALAISE THAT IS GRIPPING THIS COUNTRY.

I can accept the possiblity that he has held back for fear of being labelled sore loserman. Perhaps it was/is a legitimate concern.

Dean and Clark can only do so much. I'd love to see Kerry on MTP etc, giving them hell. I'm hopeful.
