Wal-Mart to Open Supercenter in Elk Grove, Calif.

he Sacramento Bee
09/16/2005

Sep. 16--Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to open a 247,700-square-foot Supercenter at Sheldon and Power Inn roads in Elk Grove, a move that could portend big changes for Sacramento shoppers and supermarkets.

The store, larger than five football fields when measured in square feet, would be built on the northeast corner of the intersection. Tsakopoulos Investments is developing the vacant 20-acre parcel located a half-mile east of Highway 99.

The store would be one of four Supercenters planned for the greater Sacramento area, including a store in Antelope due to open early next year.

I dont think i can adequately express my anger over this without a lot of cursing. I've signed numerous petitions and gone to the city council meetings but it's going in anyhow, my choice is to stay and deal with the increased traffic and increased crime level or we can move.

4. we defeated a Wal-mart in a community referendum...
...a couple of years ago-- they wanted a zoning variance for their big-box right on the Eureka CA waterfront. Very devisive issue, but ultimately Wally World lost. The closest Wal-mart is STILL three hours away!

It does suck. I hope the competition isn't stifled and you can still shop elsewhere. Do you have a Costco?

10. Their suing us here
in Turlock, CA. Voters rejected their bid for a supercenter; now they're suing alleging bias (another big-box, CostCo, is already in the area). City is strapped for cash, but putting up a good fight. Damn bullies.

9. Just be glad you don't have as many as we do in the SE USA.
There are TWO supercenters within 20 minutes of my house. You can't go more than 50 miles in almost any direction without finding a supercenter (and a an abandoned Walmart site). :(

of will be going from 2 lanes total to 6 lanes. the walmart will be wedged in between 2 neighborhoods and the only other business on the street is the fire station, it's a total residential area.

14. a little gripe
"The store, larger than five football fields when measured in square feet, ..."

Well, either it's larger than five football fields or it's not. Who cares whether you use square feet or cheez-its?

Anyway, this sucks. Look for local grocery stores to close within months.

17. The local store is Belair and they are owned by a family and private
investors and they were interviewed in the-paper the other day where they said again that they won't sell and their employees will continue to be in the union. So far they have lowered the prices on 5000 items and hopefully it will keep them afloat. Bel-air and their other stores Raleys are good places to shop and they treat their employees like they are human beings.
