MAYOR GOSEK ARRESTED (Freeper)

OSWEGO - Mayor John Gosek, 58, of 275 West 7th Street, Oswego, was arrested Friday for the federal offense of "using a facility in interstate commerce (a telephone) to knowingly attempt to persuade, induce, entice, and coerce an individual under the age of 18 years to engage in sexual activity for which he could be charged with criminal offenses, that is, rape in the third degree and criminal sexual act in the third degree" in violation of the New York State Penal Code.

Gosek's arrest is the second arrest in less than two months of a city official or former city official on morals charges. Former city parks superintendent Robert P. Farrell was arrested Aug. 4 and charged with communicating indecently with 12- to 14-year-old girls using e-mail.

A criminal complaint charging Gosek with use of an interstate facility with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity with a minor will be filed today with the U.S. District Court.

Gosek will be taken before U.S. Magistrate Judge George H. Lowe in Syracuse for an initial appearance at 4:30 p.m. today.

If convicted, Gosek faces a minimum mandatory sentence of five years' imprisonment, a maximum possible sentence of 30 years' imprisonment, and a fine of up to $250,000.

Gosek's arrest resulted from an investigation undertaken by the New York State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John Katko and Edward Broton are responsible for the prosecution of the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney's Office.

grew up with him in fact. He was always looking for attention - the only Jewish guy in a small southern backwater from a fairly well to do family.

After high school, he partied a lot, was supported to a great extent by his father and sold drugs, eventually taking over his father's local business. I moved away early on and lost direct contact with him.

The last time I saw him was at a high school reunion cruise. Immediately upon seeing him, he shook my hand and said - not hello - but "George Bush for President in 2000." I, along with most others, was taken aback and laughed to myself hysterically. I couldn't take him seriously (I mean GWB FOR PRESIDENT - IMAGINE!!) and after all he was just being Marty. He had an EXTREMELY young girl with him whom he says he'd just met and paid to come with him on the cruise. He noted that they planned to stay in their room and do Ecstasy the majority of the time. We all rolled our eyes and while we knew on one hand he was telling the truth, we also knew he was just being Marty and looking for attention. He also tried to pick up MY daughter by regaling her with stories of how he smuggled drugs into the country back in the 70's and 80's.

Now I had known that he had become a rethug blowhard and that he was also a laughingstock in the area by most people. But during the cruise he began to tell me of his website and invited me to come over and see. Now I wasn't very politically astute then, but I have been fairly liberal most of my life. After getting home and seeing his website, I was aghast! On one hand he was railing against Clinton and spouting family values while at the same time posting pics of scantily clad YOUNG women and using them as sexual objects and advertisements for the site. In knowing what his personal life was really like, I felt compelled to tell him what I thought and I began an on-and-off correspondence with him. He took it all in stride - or maybe least he thought I was just another crazy lib and laughed. He wasn't malicious to me on a personal level, but then he never was to people he actually knew. He was just sort of - you know that crazy Marty.

Anyway, within a year or two, I can't remember exactly, I got the news that he was arrested trying to pick up an underage girl and pay her for sex with drugs. Of course, I knew it was true - everyone did who knew Marty. I wrote him and told him that I was appalled at his behavior and that I finally had to cut my ties with him. I told him to not send me any more email updates or anything until he got his life back in order. I never heard from him again.

A few weeks later I heard that after an apparent suicide attempt, he died. The report was he able to walk to the ambulance and that the cuts to his wrists and the drug overdose he took weren't serious enough to kill him. He died anyway. I never found out what really happened.

I carried a lot of guilt over that for a few years. Instead of reaching out to him, I shunned him. And it does still haunt me, but I also realize that Marty brought this on himself. He was a bright, funny guy when he wanted to be. But he spewed hatred and got what he deserved. I hated it all for his family who are good people, but I also hated it for all the innocent peaceful people he hurt.

and took advantage by getting my degree at SUNY at Oswego while I was there. I was married to a native Oswegoan and his family lived there for a few generations.

This little city is bordered by Lake Ontario and knowing the population I have to wonder why there would be any Republicans there. There are only a handful of really rich and the majority is lower middle to poor. It had a reputation for having more bars per capita than any other city.

It's typical of many small towns where you have to be in the right party for certain jobs.

It is probably best known for Nine Mile 1 and 2 - nuclear plants which for a time raised the income level of many. Of course the high level of cancer patients in the area aren't connected.
