3. You know they make more than they "officially" do.
They probably own huge amounts of Halliburton and Bechtel stock.

5. Compared with the private sector, that's not all that high.
Sure, I hate these guys. But for high profile positions like these, $160K isn't very much. Hell, I wouldn't do it for that.

The real issue is that these salaries are TOO SMALL (hear me out).

Actual qualified individuals can make a lot more in the private sector and, at the same time, not have to deal with the crap that comes with beign a publicly known name.

At this level of pay, you attract two types (which can and do overlap):

- Cronies not qualified to hold down real jobs.
- People looking to cash out as lobbyists (or other influence peddlers) after leaving gov't.

Neither of these is good for the people.

Double these salaries (which would still be a drop in the bucket compared to what's been wasted on Iraq), put more restrictions on post-gov't lobbying, and hold the officials accountable for their performance. Then we *might* get gov't that actually serves the people rather than themselves.

7. These White House positions aren't viewed as longtime careers.

And the people who occupy these positions know it. They view their positions as more like internships where, if they work it right, they can springboard into a job in the private sector for much more than the average salary. They are there for eight years at the most and they all know it. After that they use their influence and their contacts to secure something more lucrative. Look at Bill Moyers, Hodding Carter, Stephanopoulos, et al.

10. I agree.
These people are just going to turn around and "cash in" on their jobs after they get out of government. I especially agree about more restrictions on post-government lobbying. The fricking lobbyists are killing our Democracy. It is so hard for we the constituents to get heard when the stupid lobbyists are being so damn loud.

First, kill all the lobbyists. :7

9. Oh, and...
It's pointless comparing their salaries to the 'private sector'. Compare their salaries to OUR salaries.

To a teacher or a policeman or a factory-worker (if there are any these days) salary.

WHORES!

11. You think Rove would settle for such a measly salary?
"In 1993, according to the New York Times, Karl Rove + Company was paid $300,000 in consulting fees by John Ashcroft's successful Senate campaign (Ashcroft paid Rove more than $700,000 over the course of three campaigns). In 1999, Karl Rove + Company was paid $2.5 million in fees by the successful George W. Bush presidential campaign. According to Rove, 'bout 30 percent of that is postage.'"

13. I wouldn't be surprised to hear

that they go on a lot of expense-paid "fact finding" trips. Places that are really in need of investigating. You know, like the Carribean islands, the South Pacific islands, Las Vegas. You know.
