Many have probably noticed this, but...does anyone else think it's funny
that Hurricanes Katrina and now Rita ripped up our oil supply lines in such a way as to severely reduce our burning of it?

They say nature works in mysterious ways...but, this is kind of weird.

in my opinion. :)

4. LOL well, could be.

But they do have to get at the oil where it is...Maybe they could have strengthened the platforms or supply lines.

In any case, and I'm not even sure how many platforms Rita will hit (I'm guessing only off the Texas coast), all these hurricanes we're getting seem to be hitting directly at our environmental excesses.

7. Well, I made a run for the gas station this morning.

I expect it will hit enough of them to raise the price again and if they follow through with their plans to build lots of offshore platforms, this problem that we seem to have with the reliability of our own oil production, insufficient for our needs as it is, will continue to get worse.

There is one thing that I've been wondering about since Katrina though. How are they preventing oil spills when the platform is dislodged and the currents move their underwater pipes?

9. I heard all the rigs have a shutoff valve right where the pipes enter the
sea floor. Before they evacuate, they shut that valve. Then even if the rig/platform is ripped away by the storm, the pipe SHOULD not leak. They just have to repair or replace the rig/platform.
