4. I'm scouting for an old oil drum I can make into a 2nd floor apt stove
Just in case.

I already thought it was going to be bad this winter after Katrina.

But if Rita smacks right through Texas City like it's headed now...(isn't that where the 'other' refineries are?)

12. Yikes!!!
Back in the Day, people in Maine used to call them things "Hippie Killers".

Please find yourself a decent cast-iron stove and have it installed professionally (and inspected by your local Fire Dept.).

:hi:

14. Well, it's not an optimal solution
But we rent a 2nd floor apartment. My landlord pays the heat (I'm sure he'll be raising the rent after this year), and I doubt he'd want me to install a proper wood stove.

So the scenario I'm really mostly worried about is if natural gas delivery is interrupted during the winter. At that point, I wouldn't really care what my landlord thinks (as I'd be chipping ice out of the toilet), so what would I do? I wouldn't feel comfortable sleeping around an untended oil drum stove, but if you sleep in shifts, it's better than freezing to death until you come up with a better solution.

But who knows. Last winter was really easy in Central WI, as was the winter before, etc... for probably almost 10 years. Soon enough we probably won't have to worry about freezing to death in the winter. Of course, we'll have enough other problems by then...

13. How do you make one?
I have plenty of dead lumber laying in the woods behind my house but no way to burn it.

5. Is this hurricane really going to be so strong, or did Katrina leave...
behind a "shark attack summer" mentality?

7. The only branch of the government I believe is the weather
service. The Gulf hasn't cooled down, so why shouldn't Rita behave about the same as Katrina?

9. The only difference is Rita is coming in lower
and more westerly, so it is more likely to hit TX.

15. Hopefully it won't turn further north
but no matter where it hits, it's going to suck at this point.

I'm glad there's no such thing has global warming. :sarcasm:

11. the weather service
Santorum wants to eliminate weather reports. Leave the job to private enterprise. Among his constituents - a commercial weather report service.
