Rush Limbaugh: Individuals Should Build Their Own Levees

Collective action vs. individual action is an important subject.

Sometimes addressed with idiocy. Rush Limbaugh says about the flooding of New Orleans:

If you, as a mayor, or if you, as a city council, run a city based on the welfare and entitlement thinking of government -- bammo! -- you're going to get poor citizens! If you run a city that believes in entrepreneurialism and growth and so forth, you're not going to have as much of that.

But if your city believes that it's entitled, if that's, if that's the worldview of the leaders of a community, then I don't care what their race is -- if their worldview is that this is a welfare state -- "the government needs to protect us. The government needs to feed us. The government needs to transport us. The government" -- well, guess what? "The government needs to build the levees. The government needs to make sure the levees are -- the government. " You're passing the buck all over the place...

By listening to the audio (top-right), one can tell that Rush Limbaugh says the sentence "The government needs to build the levees" as a ridiculous notion from the "welfare" point-of-view. I added quotation marks to the passage above to reflect when Limbaugh is speaking as himself and when he's quoting the attitude of a hypothetical "welfare" person.

Darn those people who expect government to build and repair levees instead of doing it themselves, like Rush Limbaugh does.

moved from Iowa/Nebraska to Arkansas. They were so excited because the land they bought only cost $6.00 for property taxes. It sounded great until the day that they got a pounding rain and the road in front of their land washed out. They waited for the county to come fix it. Finally the neighbors came storming over very angry, "When are you going to get out there and fix your road?" Those of us back home just laughed. $6.00 plus costs.
