NY Times Cutting 500 Jobs, 4 Percent Of Work Force
First they start charging premium rates for their online op-eds. NOW they are cutting back their work force to save money?

NEW YORK -- The New York Times Co. said Tuesday it would cut about 500 jobs, or about 4 percent of its work force, as part of an ongoing effort to reduce costs. The reductions come atop another 200 jobs that were cut earlier this year.

The Times said it expected 250 jobs at its main newspaper group to be affected, which includes the Times, the International Herald Tribune and the online operation of the Times. Of those job cuts, about 45 will come from the Times' newsroom, the company said in a statement.

Another 160 jobs will be cut from the Times' New England operation, which includes The Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Boston.com. The company did not provide a breakdown of those job cuts other than to say that 35 newsroom jobs would be cut at The Boston Globe.

The announcement came on the same day that The Philadelphia Inquirer and its sister newspaper said they would eliminate a combined 100 newsroom jobs because of lower circulation and revenue. The Inquirer plans to cut its editorial staff by 15 percent from 500 to 425, while the Philadelphia Daily News will cut its editorial staff 19 percent, from 130 to 105.

1. They won't need the extra people soon anyway
because the Guv'munt will be dictating the news and all the papers will have to do is make it look purdy on the page.

2. employees
If 4% = 500, then 100% = 12,500. My God, that's as many employees as has has an airline or banking chain. The NY Times employs 12,500 people? That's hard to believe.

4. Probably includes distribution (all over the world)
Can add up pretty easily. They also own the International Herald Tribune.

5. Not really.
When you consider the people who work administrative jobs, the printing processors, the custodial and maintenance crews. I can believe it.

7. Lots of people in sales too (ads, etc) -- and it is sad
Whatever we think of them, they are still much better than the rest of US papers so their decline would be a tragedy. I have made a point of subscribing to them for years even though by the time the paper arrives I already have read everything I am interested in online.

8. It is sad.
500 jobs may not sound like much, but think of the effect that will have on their families. Too bad Brooks isn't one the people.

6. If they take Judy off the payroll, they can bring back 10 useful, law-
abiding employees.

Miller and her top editors are the ones who are responsible for this. Many of us wonder whether we'll ever trust the Times again.
Fire the "star" and some top management, and no one has to be let go

9. I could not agree more.
Get Miller and Brooks off the payroll and they could probably salvage about 10 jobs.
