Crawford is almost 600 feet above sea level and a long way from the coast. If Crawford takes a bad hit, it will be Houston that garners attention.

The most that Crawford would likely get from a hurricane is a few stiff winds and some rain- it's too far inland to sustain major damage from a huricane. Worst case scenario is a renegade tornado from the storm, but even that so far inland would really be a freak occurrence.

In the meantime, the coastal areas of Texas which are mostly BLUE or at least purple are going to get hammered. And you only thought gas was expensive after Katrina- the area of Victoria, TX to Lake Charles, LA has tons of refineries and chemical plants, not to mention the offshore rigs.

As usual, Bush won't suffer, but the little people will.

Not likely, but places farther from the coast then Crawford have been massively flooded in the past.

Winds would not be very damaging, but historically most hurricane deaths are from freshwater flooding.

In 1994 Conroe, Texas received almost 24" in a 24 hour period. Last fall Beaumont, Texas received about 18" in 3 days and gets about 60" a year. So even the rain from this system would likely do very little damage, especially with how dry Texas has been lately. We actually *need* the rain from this storm, just not the damage.

Not the massive downpour a hurricane will bring. That'll only cause massive runoffs and flash flooding. But, yes, you're right, we do need the rain. The only thing likely to happen to Crawford from Rita is a good soaking.

It is a fucking big state. Crawford will get some rain. That is all. The people who get hurt will be the usual people who get hurt in hurricanes, the poor, the poorly housed, and those who live directly on the coast. The hurricane blows up one of the dry rivers, and everyone from Austin on south will suffer. Where's Crawford? North of Austin. Out by Waco. In Tornado Alley, not in vicinity of hurrican damage or post-hurrican flooding.

* Rainfall is typically heavier with slower moving storms.

My family is in the Beaumont/Pt Arthur area. My uncles work in the refineries and there are a lot of refineries down there. In the past they didn't shut down all the way, but kept a skeletal crew behind.

And Crawford won't be destroyed by the hurricane. Pleeeese, it'll be like a spring/early summer thunderstorm at it's worst.
