OMG! Keith Olberman Show! Nofacks should go to Jail!
Just watched Number 1 on Keith Olberman's countdown. His guest ex-Justice dept. guy, John Loftus says Nofaks should Go To Jail for the leak! WTF?! Does that absolve the leaker from the WH?

of the story, the two staffers who pushed the story to the six journalists.

5. 'bout fell off of the chair
Loftus says that the second leak from Novak constitutes "a pattern" which is a criminal act under Section 2 (?) of the act...therefore Novak should be "duck walked" (did he mean frog marched?).

Wow!

That's the most powerful statement I've heard yet

Olberman asked, if the guys who leaked the information were either "traitors or stupid". Loftus came down on the "stupid" side.

7. Nailing Novak Is BAD!
For at least a couple of reasons.

1. It's a distraction. They will hang him out to dry as a scapegoat.

2. They can use this to their advantage to set precedent. If reporters sources are no longer sacrosanct, the admin. can use this intimidation tactic as a tool to plug GOOD leaks.

12. Loftus wrote The Secret War Against the Jews
which documents the American/Euro-fascist collaboration, including Prescott Bush, of course.

He was a director of the Holocaust Museum in Fla. but he's supposedly Irish.

goggle his name online and you'll find lots of good info about fascists in America during the WW2 era.

I agree that going after Novak is bad. Novak, of course, was also against the war, so the Bushies probably wouldn't mind a little revenge on him, too.

however, the identities protection act is different that source protection, imo, because the issue is if Novak has exhibited a pattern of behavior which puts American national security at risk.

maybe these remarks will at least get Novak to shut up, which would be good for the country, since he keeps doing more damage.

28. I think Keith was trying to move on to the WH leakers in his last
question, but Loftus misunderstood, misheard or willfully ignored that question and repeated his attack on Novak. Since it was the last topic, there was no time for clarification, and the show ended there. I got the feeling that Keith was frustrated by this.

But I have to listen again to be sure about my impression....

WOW--I'm watching Larry King and Graham just came on to announce he's withdrawing his candidacy. I like him, but understand. He says he knows he can't win. Talk about the war as mistake, etc. Try to catch the rerun! He came on at 9:50--so 10 minutes from the end.

10. I think they're trying to intimidate reporters into naming their sources
All these reporters protecting their sources--well, lets just see how principled they really are.

And getting Novak is not a distraction ultimately. He leads somewhere. Someone gave him the information--if it's criminal for him, then it's super criminal for the person who gave it to him. Patience, I think we need patience. Let this investigation hang out there and just smell up the entire Regime, festering, wounding, getting people to start watching out for their own skins.

13. They can't be allowed to frame the debate
The focus has to be on the crime. I've been seeing a bit of shift towards putting heat on Novak and I hope the story doesn't start moving in this direction. It would be a typical bait and switch tactic. The story can't be framed as one about leaks and stopping them, as Bush would like it to be. It has to be about treason committed in the WH and Bush doing nothing about it. If the story starts to stray, it loses potency.

20. They'll have to climb over Larry Johnson to do it. He was back
on Buchanan & Press earlier. There was talk about Elliot Abrams and Scooter Libbey. He wouldn't pick a name, but the two staffers who called the six journalists are not being lost in the shuffle. Buchanan dismissed Novak as having nothing to worry about.

But I think Novak should go to jail, along with the planters.

32. I agree. Did you see him on Meet the Press yesterday. He said the
revelation was an offhand remark at the end of a conversation, implying that it was no big deal. He also said the outing of the name was pretty far down in the column, if it had been more important he would have put it in the beginning.

He kept harping on the fact that he has been in the business for 40 years.

To me, that means he knew exactly what he was doing, why he was doing it(Repug tool) and the consequences.

If it was no big deal and was indeed an offhand remark, then name the source. Save the taxpayers a lot of money, you pathetic, unpatriotic worm.

33. No, nailing Novak is GOOD!
The law is BAD.

Selective enforcement keeps the OTHER SIDE from realizing that the law is BAD.

Hence prosecuting Novak is GOOD.

Setting a precedent? If this were a left wing reporter protecting a Democrat office holder, the poor journalist would already be in Gitmo.

17. I don't see Novak going to jail, anyway. How can they prove
that he outed all the people she was connected to? There would have to be supporting evidence of that, and I don't see anyone coming forward with that kind of evidence, unless they have a death wish.

The important thing here, in my humble opinion, is that the network allowed this to be broadcast. I'm dumbfounded that it ever reached us!

Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 08:34 PM by Beetwasher
I don't think that's coincidental. There's another thread in GD about someone on CNN making the same point about Novak at pretty much the same time. I smell coordination. This is something that's starting to be pushed and it's NOT a good thing. They're trying to change the subject.

I don't think the American people will buy this b.s. any longer.

too many people have had enough of the Bushshit, from what I hear.

Did you know that soldiers are now supposed to pay for their way HOME FROM THE WAR???

WTF.

The Bushies belong in prison.

That Loftus is spinning this as "stupidity" by the White House makes me lose a great deal of respect for him. This is obviously an attempt by the White House to intimidate someone who could and would tell the truth about them.

these creeps are worse than Nixon.

22. I too hope the public would see through such a charade
and I have hope the press will do their job in distinguishing the crime from the cover-up and distraction.

I'm just noticing this little shift in focus by the apologists. This may be the tact they settled on. The "scapegoat" is a popular favorite after all.

Others have posted references on it. That's the kicker of the whole thing! How sacrosanct can they be to him if he's given them up before? And if he's done it before, how could he not do it now to expose treason? It's mind boggling!

31. Been there, done that
The paper called me today to verify I wrote it. :D Using many of the opinions posted here on DU, here's what I wrote:

Did senior Bush officials blow the cover of a US intelligence officer working covertly in a field of vital importance to national security--and break the law--in order to strike at a Bush administration critic and intimidate others? It sure looks that way, if conservative journalist Bob Novak can be trusted.

Let's look at what was compromised here. Mrs. Wilson worked with a CIA information network that was tracking the flow of WMD's. How long did it take to build this intelligence gathering operation and will it ever be possible to create another one?

What is the real threat the US faces right now? Haven't we heard over and over the danger of WMD's falling into terrorist hands? Wouldn't an active CIA operation that tracks WMD's become even MORE vital to our national security, particularly after 911?

Now we learn that two White House SENIOR OFFICIALS willingly compromised that entire National Security intelligence operation - for revenge. The real investigation, if we were serious about national security, should include an assessment of the damage done by the leak; an assessment of the increased danger to the US caused by interruption of intel on WMDs; and an assessment of what is required to replace that intel.

In essence, when these White House officials exposed Mrs Wilson and the intelligence operation she was involved in, they compromised the war on terrorism and our national security. We must all demand of our representatives, a complete and thorough independent investigation of this most egregious crime.

34. Now, that's what I call "Framing the Debate"!
Well done! If they called you, they will probably publish it, and it does a good job of focusing on the real issues of this story.

One thing I wish I understood: Novak claims that the person he spoke with at the CIA "asked me not to publish her name", and "didn't say that anyone would get hurt if I did publish it." Now, first of all, the first quote is an admission that the CIA asked him not to publish her name! Isn't that on its face a criminal act? Then he tells us what the CIA person did *not* say. He *never* says that he *asked* the CIA person if it would do any damage. He probably didn't ask, and his silence in response to the request not to publish her name was construed as assent that he would not, in fact, do so. This scenario is entirely consistent with Novak's own statements...

And it is in my opinion somewhat incriminating. Maybe enough to be useful leverage when trying to get names... ?
