14. Good luck to your state.
If that makes you mad, you should have seen a few posts last night that amounted to cheering on Rita to hit TX (because of the location of Crawford). I think some tried to say it was "humor." Don't quit your day job...

20. Regionalism
I still can't believe some people equate states with people. People are people all over the country. We all bleed red, guess that's not enough for some people.

Some people still think we Texans still ride horses to work! Well we do! To bad Boosh is afraid of horses (hmmm).

Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 08:34 PM by LibInTexas
There are others, but this pretty much says it. Few states are all red or blue.

Personally, I don't understand why there isn't a rule, among all the other rules for posting at DU, about region bashing which only seems like an attempt to get a flame war going. I can see no other reason for it.

- as they may like to think.

I should point out that the color on top is the party that took the state.

90. Well, you have to keep the shape of the states in mind
The lower half of Texas is smaller than the upper, it's not as if Texas went 50/50. But it does illustrate that no state is all red nor all blue. We all live within mixes of both.

24. Yes, thank you
I've read a few "I hope it hits Crawford" things today (check the map of Texas, Crawford it way inland, it'll get a storm that's it).

But while I'm worried about my family evacuating tomorrow (finding hotels, flying grandfather out), just as my co-worker from New Orleans was doing 3 weeks ago, everyone on DU that equates Texas with Bush (and redneck and republicans, though there is a good amount of blue in this state) can have a good little laugh.

22. Damn right. Gerald Ford would have no place in today's GOP.
A moderate Republican. No way today. Not a great man, but I think, begrudgingly, he did the right thing there, and I know I will take a hit for that, but remember: Caroline Kennedy gave Ford a Profile in Courage Award for that decision. The country was already ripped apart, and history has given Nixon his rightful condemnation. Jerry Ford was a decent Republican, as was Bill Milliken, our governor for so many years. Can't find one today.

And the wildfires and mudslides, too. Because God hates lousy presidents and punishes entire states for them. God must also hate the American auto industry, too. And Iowa suffers from tornadoes and droughts because Hoover was born there.

Is this nonsensical enough, yet?

There are many in CRAWFORD, TEXAS who do NOT support Bush. Have you ever heard of the CRAWFORD PEACE HOUSE? Did you hear about the farmer who allowed Cindy Sheehan and her bunch to protest on his land?

DO YOU REALLY HOPE RITA HITS CRAWFORD NOW?

33. Listen up folks: Rita isn't going to hurt Crawford.
The best you can hope for is some tornadoes spun out of the storm to hit Crawford. Crawford is too far inland to be really hurt by this hurricane.

As for the rest of us in Texas along the coast, we're trying to figure out if we should leave or stay. But if we leave, we could get stuck with no roof over our heads as so many hotels are already full of Katrina evacuees. So we are buying supplies like we may have to stay, or come home to a home with no clean water or electricity. It's stressful.

101. I'd leave Clear Lake too. Too close to Kemah and the
water and wind. Even if the hurricane goes in south, the rain and wind will be terrible on the north side of the storm. I hope your cuz has a reservation.

43. You know, I have to ask this of those offended by this post...
Do you just not get the frigging point of it? I do not believe god strikes at cowboys or even lousy politicians. I am clearly mocking the so called "christians" that say 9/11 or Katrina was the result of the victims and their godless ways. I want to know how they will reconcile all the hurricanes that hit Florida, and now, one that may hit Texas. Please also know that I live in Ohio, and I did not take personally, all the insults that were hurled at my state, after it supposedly went chimp last election, and those insults were cast with obvious electoral fraud to be seen. See I look at myself as a human first, not as an Ohioan, or even as an American, in a great big world with other humans. Do not take "Don't Mess with Texas" so seriously. I did not start this God hates this or that, the right-wing fuckers that like the thug in the whitehouse did. I personally believe Mother Earth hates what humans are doing to her, and is striking back to rid herself of this virus. You think people are dying now? Wait until global warming really kicks in, and you will see that worrying about a few remarks about Texas, was a pretty silly concern indeed.

Try being a Texan here on DU and having to defend your home state daily.

Try it... then get back to me.

who say Katrina hit because God was punishing gays/liberals/Democrats. In fact, he/she does post again to clarify that's what he/she meant. I don't think it was meant to bash Texas. Texas just happens to be where the next Hurricane is heading. People who would sincerely wish a hurricane to punish people are worthy of mocking.

62. There have been plenty of those in multiple threads for days, now.
It wears, especially when one's state is bashed constantly here. Even after Camp Casey, some people here can't find, let alone buy, a clue. Even Cindy Sheehan said she'd changed her mind about Texas after her stay here.

This is unbelievable. I don't mean you or what you've written, but the attitudes Texans have to contend with here almost daily.

It's still to soon to know precisely where it will hit. I know that these can do damage well inland, but the farther away from the ocean you are, the chances of escaping with little or no damage quickly go higher. I will keep you and everyone in your area in my thoughts and hope for minimal/no damage. But the wait isn't easy, I know

54. Intentions on message boards, like intentions in email ae sometimes
not as clear to the reader as to the person who wrote it. You may have had the fundie bit hooked to your post in your head, but it didn't come out that way to everybody who read it.

Sometimes adding a line to clarify is best for everyone involved. After all the post was meant to communicate what you meant.

Not wishing ill will towards Texas. It was a take on "God did this to punish Ellen Degeneres". I didn't see any malice towards Texas or making light of a potentially deadly situation. Deadly hurricanes? No humor there. Preachers foaming at the mouth declaring God's wrath? Definitely worthy of laughing at.

You can take a few minutes to really reflect on the post, and understand that it would be somewhat extraordinary, following the devastation of Katrina, for anyone here at DU to wish this upon any state or any particular group of people.

And THINK about what a person could have possibly been trying to say with their particular choice of words, in light of similar comments made in recent weeks, about a similar event.

And that if people are trying to evacuate and be safe, that they ought not continue posting to this thread.

85. I live near Port O'Connor
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 09:30 PM by sal
I just read on Accuweather that the storm could possibly strengthen to a Catagory 5 because of some hot water about 300 miles near our coast. Depending on the size of the storm, we could be wiped away. Galveston and Corpus Christi destroyed in 1919) have sea walls, but Port Aransas, Port O'Connor and Freeport do not. The sea wall at Palacios is only about three feet above the water line.

Charlie in 2004, a Cat 1, literally pushed all the water out of upper Matagorda Bay and nearly wrecked Victoria. I have a feeling that duct-tape boy, the new FEMA head ring kisser, reflected the * administration's total inability to respond to an emergency at this point when he said the other day that we need to expect "no assistance" for 72 hours following a major catastrophy. This is policy now. They want to condition us to expect no response eventually. The chance that the government would respond the way people want, post-Katrina, relies on the resources available. Political will is great; however, the shocking incompetency of this regime make predicting a decent execution of any large undertaking seem foolish. Besides, * has fixed it so that there are no available resources right now. So I think everybody should prepare for the unimaginable, and hope for the best.

I think God loves everybody. Even sarcastic misanthropes. What I believe is what the old timers say, which is that a September storm is drawn to the heat. God feels the need to water Her garden. It has been so hot and dry all through the south and midwest. She needed to water the delta on up and that's what happened in Louisianna. There might be things in life more important than people, believe it or not. Storms are just doing their job. You might even say that they love cowboys because they make the grass and the flowers grow so the cows can eat. And so you can eat cows.

Pendejo!
