WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In the latest example of the culture of corruption engulfing Republicans in Washington, the Anchorage Daily News reported this weekend that Alaska Republican Senator Ted Stevens pushed through legislation creating a special fishery in the Aleutian Islands that would provide millions of dollars worth of pollock to Adak Fisheries, a company that his son was closely associated with.
At the same time, his son, State Senator Ben Stevens, held a secret, undisclosed option that entitled him to one-fourth ownership of Adak Fisheries, a deal worth millions of dollars thanks to his father's pollock appropriations rider. Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean today issued the following statement:
"In slipping a sweetheart deal for his son's company into an appropriations bill, Senator Stevens is the latest Republican official caught up in the culture of corruption that President Bush, Tom DeLay and their cronies have brought to Washington, DC and state capitals across the country.
"Alaskans didn't send Senator Stevens to Washington to make his son a millionaire. Democrats understand that Alaskans deserve better from their leaders and are committed to promoting sound, responsible government that puts the values and interests of the people ahead of cronyism and special interests."Paid for and authorized by the Democratic National Committee,
