Yesterday I posted what I believed to be a credible plea from a volunteer working with Bogalusa, LA. The volunteer's post was dated Monday (the 19th) and said the situation there was desperate and they hadn't seen the media and needed the most basic necessities.
Most of my replies affirmed that they had heard this also, but one reply was from someone who had taken a load of items down there only to find they were not needed.
I just finished talking to city officials and they don't understand where this is coming from. They had massive support and have stockpiled items in all shelters and churches. The emergency room was never shut down, they have 90% of their power restored and the media had been there. They said that, of course, there is massive damage that will need clean up for months and months, but, it is not in the situation that has been described.
My info was originally off of Veteran's For Peace site. I will check into it further. I know that everything is changing on the ground constantly, but it is very depressing to think that supplies aren't getting to where they are most needed because of mis-communication. Honestly, I would have just called down there before posting yesterday, but, with the way it was described I doubted there was any power. This person did give me some numbers from N.O. area and I will pass along any info after I verify it. St. Bernard's Parish is still in the most desperate shape, but it cannot be entered.
