4. Me neither
Than again, if even this won't make them wake up and see that the Republicans are no ally of theirs, then what will?
Honestly, if it's just for economic reasons, that's a damn shame. A damn, damn shame.

7. Clinton signing the DefenceofMarriageAct didn't drive gays from our party
Why would this drive gays out of thier party. They are Republicans in spite of that party's stance on gays rights. This is not change in the party's agenda.

9. unlike the Republicans...
The Democratic party is filled will allies that will continue to fight for total equality for gays/lesbians/tras.
The Republicans continue to devalue them as human beings.
End of story.

13. But they really didn't have anywhere to go
except the Greens. This time around there are Dem candidates offering real hope for change.

I can understand why INDIVIDUAL gays might stay Republicans - well, I can't understand it really, but you know what I mean.

But I don't know how there could be a bonafide, official Republican Support Group in the face of this. I know they say they want to change the party from the inside, but it ain't gonna happen as long as the Christian right has a stranglehold on their 'pubs and they ain't gonna change in our lifetime.

24. They could always stay home.
Stop writing checks to campaigns.
Stop voting.

I know too many GLBT people who don't participate at all because they feel it doesn't matter. They know they're the "third rail" of politics.

Also, many probably did go Green in 2000.

Bush's announcement was timed to commemorate the murder of Matthew Shephard.

This is a big FU to gay Americans and decent people everywhere. This president is a disgrace.

12. I'm a lesbian and I guarantee you that it's all about greed and
taxes. I was friends with a gay male couple and they voted for Bush. They make a lot of money and believe me, that's ALL it's about for them. They could care less about anything else. I'm barely friends with them anymore because our values are so different. It's really sad...what money can do to people. The one guy used to be the greatest, most caring, not materialistic at all...until he became partners with the other guy who cares about NOTHING but money. It just makes me sick.

16. I'm not surprised.
I read once that white gay male couples are the highest paid of all "couples", which itself isn't surprising given the unexplained wage gap that puts white males at the top of the heap. In any event, as a previous post said, if all they're interested in is not paying taxes, their discretionary cash can buy a luxurious and spacious closet to live in.

19. I'm sorry but that's just SO wrong
MOST (white) gay men are liberals and they largely worked for the cause for a LONG time--even when they weren't welcome in the late 60s and 70s. They have also spent lots of money on democratic candidates. To pretend that they are only interested in not paying taxes is to ignore their entire response to AIDS, to civil rights, and to feminism.

21. That is a false statistic that has been used to provoke hate and bias
It has been debunked. There is a DU poster who is bigoted in regards to gays who posts that statistic all the time. She never posts the link to the "poll." It has been debunked. If any of you believe it and has the link--please post it.

Your sentence: "white gay male couples are the highest paid of all "couples" would be almost impossible to prove. It would have been arrived at by looking at a small sample of individuals who fit the criteria of "couple." Do you honestly think gay male couples are the "highest paid" "couples" in this country? The numbers are played with by the statisticians of hate in those studies.

27. Yep. And they actually get treated well enough *as individuals*
Edited on Tue Oct-07-03 04:50 AM by Mairead
because for the hets it's all about money too. Just as Jews and (the few) Black people get treated reasonably well. If they have money and are greedy, they're members of the club.

It's a little like paedophiles, really -- the pathology is a uniting factor.

18. If he had vetoed it the election in 1996 would have been a lot closer
He beat Dole by a comfortable margin (about 9%). Had he vetoed that bill and not signed the bill for welfare reform, it could have been enough to turn swing states and changed the result of the election. President Dole would have signed the bill in January of 1997.

couldn't he have allowed it to become law without his signature?

GLBT people would not have felt betrayed at least.

Just a hypothesis.

25. The GOP would have ran TV ads
about how he would not sign the bill. Then cut to footage of a gay pride parade's leather division. That would have played real well in states like PA, LA, and MO.

Are not Log House Republicans also anonymous? I mean way in the closet? Is that not important too? That and not paying taxes? A honest question, I don't know.

20. No they are not all in the closet, but all have been wealthy
That I have known. However, in their defense, read through this thread and you will see excuses for Clinton signing the DOM act, but not for the Republican's who sign it. I think that it is that kind of hypocrisy of our party that helps them decide to go with the tax incentives.

The Green party is the most advanced in regards to gay and lesbian rights. I would understand Gays and Lesbians voting Green party if they are tired of being taken for granted by the Democratic party.

It is hard for me to fathom how anyone, even a wealthy person, could vote Republican.

22. No, their meetings are open.
It isn't a clandestine group. http://www.lcr.org

Their support for Republicans is also influenced, in my experience, by racism. Believe it or not, there are gays who are racist!

The predominant factor is, of course, money. All the LCR people I know have a net worth of at least $5M. In number, they are insignificant. In dollars, however, they have so clout.

Not to be one-sided, I should also add that they claim to be working to change the Republican party from the inside out.

Prior to the Lawrence v. Texas decision, there was talk that BushCo was losing support from the fundies because they were actually talking to the Log Cabin Republicans.
