Rita could equal $5 gas

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Remember when gas spiked to $3-plus a gallon after Hurricane Katrina? By this time next week, that could seem like the good old days.

Weather and energy experts say that as bad as Hurricane Katrina hit the nation's supply of gasoline, Hurricane Rita could be worse.

Katrina damage was focused on offshore oil platforms and ports. Now the greater risk is to oil-refinery capacity, especially if Rita slams into Houston, Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas.

"We could be looking at gasoline lines and $4 gas, maybe even $5 gas, if this thing does the worst it could do," said energy analyst Peter Beutel of Cameron Hanover. "This storm is in the wrong place to give us any help. And it's absolutely at the wrong time," said Beutel.

I could still afford enough gas to get around, and people who drive huge SUV's because they're fashionable...well, too bad. But I really feel for small business people who have to drive, esp. if they need a sizable truck.

They'd just claim that no one could have ever predicted we needed to move away from imported fossil fuels or towards higher milage cars. They'll claim its not their fault since it was just totally unpredictable. :rolleyes:

8. Anyone drive a Scion xb?

These thing supposedly get 30-35 mpg CITY. Starts at $14k. Trade in your hummer for 2 of 'em.

9. I have the xA, no supposedly about it

Sweet little car, the past week I've been doing a lot of highway driving and I'm averaging close to 40 mpg. City driving does around 33 mpg. I highly recommend it for a solid commuting car, or all-around fun ride.

10. The good news is that such high prices will cause oil companies

to produce more if they want to try to capitalize on it so when conditions return to normal, prices may level off in the high twos again.
