Well, let me tell you, they don't make one look smarter. They make you look like a pretentious asshole.

Hear that Mr. Carlson? You look like an asshole!

1. One motto of mine, dating from my childhood, is this:
Never, ever trust a man wearing a bow tie unless he is also wearing a tuxedo.

2. Paul Simon was pretty cool
for a guy who favored bowties.

5. Yes, he was
one of our great statesmen; I miss him.

I've known many, many men who have worn bowties instead of regular ties; only a few of them were asses, much like those who've worn regular ties.

3. I'm often tempted
to wear two bow ties. Think I'd look twice as smart?

20. That's important.
Having the self-confidence that a double dose of bow-tie aerodynamics counts in modern society. I could end up being invited to meet Sean Hannity.

24. Or the Master Dirigible himself
MR LIMBAUGH. Holy cow. Just remember to lock your seat in an upright position and extinguish all smokables when doing your approach to the gaseous one.

4. In a college Psych course, I read it had something to do with
stunted sexuality or something. But, my own theory is they wear bowties because no Leftie would be caught dead in one (except while in a tuxedo... ;) )

17. Senator Paul Simon always sported one.
He's a worthy progressive in recent history:

21. But then the left gets stigmatized as elitist bow tie wearers.
When someone makes a caricature of a liberal (Like a liberal character from the Mallard Fillmore strip), they always make them wear a bow tie...Even though all I've ever seen, are Republicans wearing the damn things...

6. Bow ties are dorky!
Only old men, little boys, members of a wedding party or maitre d's should wear bow ties. Anyone else looks like a complete dork!

16. I saw Blumenauer on the teevee not long ago
wearing a turtleneck shirt and no glasses. I almost didn't recognize him!

Good guy, though, despite questionable choice in ties. ;)

19. It may be for parctial reasons rather than fashion
He usually rides a bicycle to the office in DC, and a bowtie would be less likely to flap in the wind.

18. It works for some, but with others like Carlson, it makes them look
like they're one wing short of a fairy, IMO.
