Cost of Rebuilding New Orleans???

Congressional Republicans from across the ideological spectrum yesterday rejected the White House's open-wallet approach to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, a sign that the lockstep GOP discipline that George W. Bush has enjoyed for most of his presidency is eroding on Capitol Hill.

Trying to allay mounting concerns, White House budget director Joshua B. Bolten met with Republican senators for an hour after their regular Tuesday lunch. Senators emerged to say they were annoyed by the lack of concrete ideas for paying the Hurricane Katrina bill.

3. ideas? . . . they want ideas for paying for Katrina (and now Rita)? . . .

I'll give 'em a few ideas . . .

- rescind the tax cuts to the wealthy
- tax increase for anyone making over $200,000/year
- closing corporate tax loopholes, and penalizing corporations who take operations offshore to avoid taxes
- end the Iraq war and bring the troops home
- reduce other American military presence around the globe to a minimum
- cancel all pork included in recently passed legislation

that's just for starters . . . given some time, I'm sure we could all come up with good additions to this list . . .

4. Addendum to #3 - give gov't contracts only to US companies hq'd

in the US. Halliburton and Carlyle Group are both out of the country. All those billions given away in Iraq are tax free.
