3. Near San Antonio
Tornadoes spawned from Rita may pose a threat. That's about it. Oh, I guess a lot of rain could lead to flooding, but NB is on the outskirts of Texas Hill Country.

7. New Braunfels
a company in New Braunfel Texas makes the best smokers for pig roasts. They make them in all sizes. You see a lot of their grills, smokers in my area. Also pretty pricey too.

11. A lot of sudden, heavy rain WILL lead to flooding in New Braunfels
The Comal River has a history of flooding. The water park, Schlitterbahn, runs alongside the river and takes a terrible beating when the floods hit. That's usually how the damages from the rising water end up on TV, because of Schlitterbahn. Otherwise, whatever happens there is usually overshadowed by the same conditions in either San Antonio or Austin (or both).

If the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers flood, San Marcos and New Braunfels (and nearby towns) will be in trouble.

16. True, IF they flood
It will take a lot, since the rivers are not high now.

19. True, but north of there has been told to expect heavy rains
And the water will head that way. My concern is that the ground won't soak up the water in time. It's too dry. Flash flooding from any significant rain will be inevitable. I hope it misses this area completely, for many reasons.

5. New Braunfels is about 30 miles N of San Antonio
Safe from the hurricane, but possibly in danger of tornadoes depending on where the storm makes landfall.

6. Just north of San Antonio. Possible secondary flood damage
New Braunfels and San Antonio are at the outlets for the rivers in the Hill Country, so if the storm came into Corpus Christi and went up through San Antonio, it could cause a lot of river flooding in the two cities. These areas have horrific flooding in heavy rain.

But that's not too likely. The storm should turn north before it gets near San Antonio. And usually the floods require a few days of raining, and it's been dry.

22. I doubt if a hurricane can develop into a tornado.....
Tornadoes are mostly created when warm air meets cold air. So I doubt that a tornado could grow out of a hurricane.

Living in Oklahoma, we have a LOT of experience with tornadoes but not so much with hurricanes.

30. "...once a hurricane reaches land, it could form tornadoes thousands of "
miles away."

http://www.ivanhoe.com/science/story/2005/06/20a.html
"These are tornadoes that get their strength and power from the hurricane in which they're embedded," says Joe Schaefer, Ph.D., a meteorologist at NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla."

"The year 2004 brought the most tornadoes on record with 1,817, and more than 330 of those were from hurricanes. Hurricane Ivan produced the most tornadoes ever in September 2004 with 123 spawned tornadoes."

32. I'm not sure how this is related to my post, but about tornadoes
Hurricanes spawn tornadoes. A lot of the damage from Katrina just beyond the coast in Mississippi seems to have been hurricane damage. As hurricanes weaken and move further inland, they cause even more tornadoes, usually around the leading edge.

Every hurricane is different, though. Some have more tornadoes than others.

By the way, I think from your pictures here that folks can see that flooding in this area is more than possible. That's a river with a lot of impact in the local area.

14. Do you remember a flooded river sweeping away a school bus in '87?
Well, that was near New Braunfels. It can, does, and will flood something fierce. Those teenagers in that bus, the ones who lived, will attest to that. Flash flooding is very real and very dangerous. The Guadalupe and Comal Rivers are not to be trifled with in a time of heavy rains.

15. New Braunfels is only at risk from heavy rains
west and north of San Antonio. Sorta like the catastrophic flooding in '98 in New Braunfels, and again in 2001 just downstream of New Braunfels.

That being said, it isn't entirely safe, although the storm looks more likely to miss it to the east.

I've been exiled to East Texas. God, I wanna go home. Don't come to Lufkin. It just ain't worth it. Go to New Braunfels and eat at Clear Springs Cafe.

God, I'm homesick.

21. It looks like New Braunfel is hosting lots of Katrina evacuees - I bet
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 03:04 PM by jean
the area is taking major precautions, and your friend will be okay.

Here's the main paper serving New Braunfels, which is in Comal County, TX - maybe you could see updates here:
http://www.herald-zeitung.com/

The city website has a link to a 6 page PDF file informing Katrina evacuees of the help available in New Braunfel:
http://www.ci.new-braunfels.tx.us/

New Braunfel has a fabulous waterpark resort (Schlitterbahn) whose website has this announcement:
http://www.schlitterbahn.com/nb/intro-nb1.asp
"Due to the arrival of hurricane evacuees, all New Braunfels motels and resorts are full this weekend."

 The New Braunfel water park main page has a fantastic 'Weather' link on its front page. It offers many options, you can look at state radar, severe weather and more. (Weather link is in the list on the left side on the front, home page)
