will be flooding around the bayous when they crest.

When we were looking for a house, I kept in close contact with the FEMA flood maps prepared after TS Allison, and rejected anything that was even close to a 100-year floodplain. So I'm not worried about our house flooding.

Houston floods all the time. In 2001 when there was a mere tropical storm that came through there were 17,000 people displaced and 21 deaths. Rita will make that look like a spring rain if it hits the Galveston/Houston area.

I've run into several people who think Houston is above flood plane in the past few days and wanted to make sure that wasn't what you had intended. The same bayous that drain from Houston into the Gulf will channel the surge up and into Houston. Once you add in the heavy rains you get a pretty severe flooding situation.

In a worst case direct hit the loss of life will not equal NO. Large numbers of displaced citizens and substantial property damage, yes. But what really matters is how many people survive.

It's also important to note that most of the people of Houston would be able to return to their homes much sooner than the people of NO. Houston will drain naturally where NO could not begin to drain until the pumps were up and running.

30. SLOSH models, in the past,

have indicated that the surge from a Cat 5 would roll right through Clear Lake, Taylor Lake Village and Kema (other small communities, too, but I cannot remember all the names), and eventually flood all the way to the space center, which is built high enough that all of it would not be underwater. It was intended to be used as an emergency shelter during the 1990s, but I don't know if that has changed. (SLOSH= Sea, Lake, and Overland Surge from Hurricanes).
