Most likely simulation model puts Rita at Galveston in 66 hours.
Evacuation may become impossible after 50 hours as the winds and outer band storms pick up.

GET OUT OF THAT AREA.

DO NOT STAY EVEN IN A REINFORCED HIGH RISE HOTEL BUILDING.

has been given ample opportunity. Even the poor. If anyone stays behind with this coming at them, they are insane.

6. Far fewer poor people on Galveston - it's just a matter of numbers
Galveston Island is not nearly as populated as New Orleans. It's much easier to get everyone out of there.

The Houston metro area is a different matter, and actually where the real potential for mass loss of life is. The entire area is a coastal floodplain.

Anybody who has read the book Isaac's Storm detailing the destruction of Galvestan by hurricane will realize that the city will sustain catastrophic damage if Rita hits nearby.

The book tells an amazing story...
