Celebrity Sighting! Please read, you'll love the ending!
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 11:13 PM by VolcanoJen
OK, everyone, I just received the most hilarious phone call from one of my friends, KC, in San Francisco.

100% true, and it just happened tonight.

KC and his friend decided to get some crab, so they went to Nonna Rose Seafood in Fisherman's Wharf. They wanted one of the outside tables, waited a few minutes, and were seated.

Just after they sat down, they heard a gruff man at the table next to them complaining to his waiter. "I thought you said I'd get some privacy here," he complained. "We're very busy tonight, sir, I'm sorry" he replied.

So, KC glances over at this guy. He's an older guy, strange-looking, by himself, reading a magazine, and there's a little grey-haired poodle at his feet, lapping water like crazy out of a very nice dish. He absolutely glares at my friend. KC leans across the table and whispers, "What an asshole," to his buddy. "Poor dog," his friend answers.

They're well into appetizers when the man calls over the server by crooking his finger. "Get the manager," he commands.

"Is something wrong?" the server says.

"Yes, I need to move my dog's water dish, but I'm not going to touch it myself."

Now, KC just about drops his fork when he hears this. I'm still a bartender, and he used to be, and that's got to be one of the most condescending requests he's ever heard.

The server rolls his eyes at KC and his friend, walks away, and soon the manager shows up.

"Sir?"

"Well, how am I supposed to touch this food after touching the dog's bowl? Move it and bring him another one!" he yells.

At this point, KC's friend says to him, "You know, that guy looks familiar. He even sounds familiar. I think he's famous or something."

The manager actually kneels down and starts to move the bowl when the man screams out,

"What are you doing?? Make the busboy do that!!"

KC and his friend actually burst out laughing at this point. They look over at the guy, and KC says it looks like he's about to bare teeth.

Eventually, a poor busboy is dispatched to move the dog's bowl. The man finishes his dinner, glares at KC's table, gets up and leaves.

They immediately call their server over.

"Hey, was that someone famous? He sure was an asshole."

"Yeh," the server said. "He eats here pretty often."

"So is he someone famous? He looks familiar, kinda."

"Oh, him?" the server says. "That's Michael Savage."

As soon as their dinner was over, KC was sweet enough to call me. "You're the first person I thought of," he said. "You should post that all over the internets."

}(

Have any of you San Franciscan DUers had unfortunate run-ins with Savage before?

This isn't the first story I've heard about him and his antics.

Can you believe he was once a hippie?

7. Who wants to bet he had food stuck in his beard?
How does a guy from San Fran who apparently loves dogs turn into such a raging rightie assbag who abuses wait staff?

A hippie once? Seriously? Now, that's sad.

And why in the hell did he want the dog dish "moved"? WTF is that about?

:-)

They were just trying to fit in and get some nookie. They did not share the progressive ideals of most hippies. Apparently, Savage (a pseudonym I believe), never did get any nookie to this day.

A complete and total asswipe that would turn coward if ever confronted. Just the kind of phony assmunch like Nugent and Limbaugh that freepers worship.

Was a hippie.

I was at a Dead show in Buffalo as this girl came bounding around the corner. She flew up to me and gave me a big hug.

I had managed to foil pickpockets twice before, but this took me totally off-guard. (even though it's obvious in retrospect)

Luckily, that hug only cost me $30... and she was a cutie!

I'd say roughly half the 'hippies' I've known were assholes. The other half didn't talk the talk at all... they just lived it.

147. Conservatives
I don't mean to irritate anyone here, but this is an amazing conversation. I grew up among conservatives who said the same thing about "hippies" and "liberals," but I didn't believe them. However, the few times that I did meet hippies, I thought that they were entirely too defensive.

This is so often said by so-called "conservatives"! (I said I didn't want to irritate anyone here; I don't want to imply that if you can't stand hippies, you would vote for Bush or would want to take away everyone's civil rights.)

What interests me most is that when you read conservative opinions (I mean the opinions of ordinary people), it seems to me the only reason they vote Republican or read the National Review and think it is amusing is because they, the conservatives, are entirely too vulnerable -- they are easily hurt and they might be from poor backgrounds. So, quite unintentionally, the conservatives (except for a few haters) are on the same page as you, the progressives, but psychological and socioeconomic barriers interfere.

I find this fact overly fascinating and will probably mention it many more times in the hope that the rift between factions will be repaired and the country can be spared any further "leadership" by the most evil people in the world.

I live in Atlanta now, with a whole other brand of assholes. But last weekend, I had a breath of home as I listened to a pampered white suburban Desperate-Housewife type complain that the store (Whole Foods) didn't have shelled fresh edamame beans, but only the frozen variety. The clerk explained that they did have fresh edamame in the shells and the woman said, "YOU EXPECT ME TO SERVE EDAMAME IN THE SHELL LIKE AN ANIMAL?" I just burst out laughing. The glared at me and I just about pissed myself laughing so hard.

Is that hippies are white, suburban, faux-proletarian, sanctimonious pinheads with a glorified sense of self-importance and NO SENSE OF HUMOR WHATSOEVER.

Ultimately, it's just a scheme to sell tie-dyed shirts and hideous Birkenstocks to impressionable bourgeois white people - with a glossy layer of leftist rhetoric thrown in to assauge their guilt. And an excuse not to bathe.

Berkeley, San Francisco, Eugene, OR etc.) as being one thing or another and generalizing them and stereotypes....

A hippie that can't laugh at himself can't laugh at anything, and is therefore, I think, not a hippie. Of course, it's important to be earnest, but...

206. Some of the anti-hippie crap sounded
rather nasty though.

As a hippy at heart (and in fact) since 1965 in South Fla. It's pretty obvious to me that the "anti-hippie nazis" in this thread have known very few actual hippies.

It would also seem that when they see someone they can stereotype as their idea of a "hippie" they have a rather knee-jerk reaction with no cause or justification.

As for mr. savage, consider the source of the "hippie" crap.

66. It seems that a lot of the "hippies" from those areas where
hypocrites. Not the necessarily the areas they live in - well except for maybe Berkeley, San Rafael, San Anselmo, etc. But it seems that many of the more outspoken ones who congregated in those areas did not practice what they preached.

108. Here is why you are wrong
I don't have preconceptions. I give everyone a fair chance - clean slate and all - but every time, meeting self-styled hippies leaves me with that perception.

I have met more than my share of phony hippies (every town must have a place where phony hippies meet). I marched at WTO in Seattle (lived there for 15 years), 2 anti-Iraq War marches, and one of the International Women's Day marches.

I did better hanging with authentic people there - not the spoiled white bourgeois Birk/tie-dye/dreadlock/Nader/hackysack contingent. :puke:

They didn't really believe in peace, tolerance, or love... They looked down on those who didn't dress or think as they did. This boomer-centric ethos manifested itself in the 80's when they quickly sold out and became yuppies.

The ones who didn't become Repukes are just as humorless and sanctimonious as ever, with the same bad hygiene and scolding disposition.

And yes, I loved the irony of your post.

82. YAY, hippie bashing!!!!
My self -righteous hippie story:

When I was younger, I used to hang with a lot of Deadheads, though I've always been more into Indie rock and Punk. (Deadheads had the best weed.) Anyhoo, I used to love to poke fun of the glaring holes in many of their ideologies. For example, I had one friend who was a vegetarian for what he claimed were animal rights reasons. I have no problem with vegetarians but I couldn't help but notice his leather Birkenstocks. Upon pointing out that an animal did indeed have to die for his shoes, his excuse became "Well, the animal had to die anyway, blah, blah, blah." Bear in mind, he was sanctimonious and condenscending as hell towards us carnivores. At that point, I realized his "fashion" sense was more imporatant to him than others sustenance. Wanker.

120. i got one...
there was this girl when i was in college that was easily one of the most sanctamonious hippies i've ever met, and not very bright, either. she was vegan, but if you said veeghun, she'd interrupt and correct you "it's 'vay-ghan'" :eyes:

she got a peace corp assignment to (i think) tanzania. she was all hubbub about it, which is fine... i actually admired that she would follow through. but then she starts some long speech about how she was going to reform the locals to make them vegan, and that she would refuse to eat meat with them or have anything to do with livestock. she said something about how they might be offended, but it would make them better people.

now, i've been to some degree or another vegetarian most of my adult life, but even when i was strictly vegetarian, i would NEVER refuse to share a meal with someone, no matter how much meat was involved. to me, it goes beyond rude to refuse to 'break bread' with soemone... it is a denial of the most basic and sincere of human interactions and to refuse to share in a meal is to deny a bond everyone seeks.

so here she was, going over to a developing nation and telling villagers whom she was to help that their food (all that they had to share!!) was not good enough for her.

i was livid... i told her what a hollow, sanctimoniuos person she was and that she should be ashamed of herself for planning to refuse the kindness of her hosts. i compared her to the conquistodores (and i think the analogy was lost) who just wanted conversions. this happened at a pot-luck, and damned near everyone there backed me up.

she was scarcely seen after that. this was also the girl who was going to get a 'tribal tattoo' on her lower back. when i asked her which tribe, she looked at me like I was the dumb one.... 'you, know, like a TRIBAL tattoo.' oh and she missed the boat on the vegan/leather thing, too.

135. On travel boards, you get self-righteous vegans going to China,
Vietnam, or India and having hissy fits because although a street vendor honored their request for no meat in their soup or stir fry, he made it with chicken broth or just gave them some of whatever dish it was with the meat picked out instead of cooking up a separate batch for them. Or the waiter in the hotel brought a pitcher of milk for their morning rice porridge. Or some well-meaning Indians recommended a vegetarian restaurant, but horror of horrors, there was cheese in some of the dishes.

And I'm thinking, "People in China and India literally starved to death in the 1960s, and Vietnam is still terribly poor, and this pampered Westerner, who has the money to spend a year traveling the world has the NERVE to criticize them for not being pure vegans."

But criticize such people for their rudeness and inflexibility, and you get sermons about the poor little animals or how Third World people would be healthier if they gave up meat and dairy products.

Of course, people in many parts of China and India have had the experience of giving up animal protein foods--during their famines.

Seriously, not all "deadheads" are like this, and do not warrant bashing.
I'm the child of a pair of deadheads, and I turned out to be one too. I don't cling to any wonky ideology. I was a vegetarian for a period of time, but for a health related reason. Once that passed, I went back to my meat habit. I do shower, and shave my pits and legs.
For me, and most of the heads I still know, it was about the music and the "community" (but that community started to get really seriously sucky in the early 90s when legions of jerks started coming to shows just for the drugs and causing problems)
I do wear birks (I have several pairs actually, even clogs for the winter) but its for comfort and nothing else.
Other than that...I'm your typical progressive dem soccer mom of four kids in rural NY

SO..I take offense to the bashing and grouping all posers into one freaking group.
As for Ann Coulter...good god. I bet she was one of those assholes there for the drugs. Yes..that must be her problem! Too much bad acid!

209. Actually, as the daughter of a hippie,
I have to disagree.

My mother the hippie is white. She grew up in the midwest, she is one of the working poor, and she worked blue collar jobs as a single mom to raise me. She finally went to college after I graduated from high school. While we had our share of tie-dye, she never wore Birkenstocks; way too pricey. If she couldn't get it at Payless, we didn't wear it.

She taught me about her childhood, and about the meaning of racism. While we were still in the midwest, She made sure I grew up with a rainbow of people of all colors, faiths, and sexual orientations, and that I loved them before I hit the bigotry of the larger world.

She worked hard to be a "liberated" woman, and taught me not to accept the limits she was raised with. She cut off contact with her family, who told her in high school that her place was to become a nurse or secretary until she got married, and that her passion for math, music and science was tomfoolery to be left behind. She allowed me to shine in all the ways I chose.

From her I learned to truly like people; all people, without judgement. I learned that I could care about people even if I disagreed with their choices. I learned from her history of family abuse that hate and violence are never ways to resolve conflict. I learned that loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, and kindness were the qualities that made a person "beautiful."

I learned that the world was my oyster, and that any path was open to me as long as I was willing to work for it. I learned to find joy in everything I did; to love music, art, and literature of every sort.

I learned that if you didn't like something, you were supposed to dive in with energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.

I wish everyone had a mom like my mom the hippie. Her beads, feathers, candles, tie-dye, yoga, meditation, sweat lodges, etc. don't bother me in the least. I join her in her calls for peace and love around the world. I am proud of her for leaving her guilt-ridden christian background far behind her and exploring all those other spiritual paths, before finally settling in with buddhism about 15 years ago.

She has a wonderful sense of humor. She loves to play practical jokes, she loves to tease, and she especially loves to laugh. When she laughs, it's not a gentle, genteel sort of laugh. She roars. She loves belly laughs. It's taken a lifetime for her more subdued daughter to give up being embarrassed in public, when people can hear her from 6 aisles away and turn around to see "what's so funny." People generally smile along with her. They seem drawn to her like a magnet, and they naturally love her.

If the world were full of hippies like my mom, it would be a better planet.

What's the difference between stereotyping hippies in order to characterize them negatively, or any other particular group?

I don't think it matters whether a person considers themself conservative or liberal, or which groups they single out, racial, political, spiritual, or cultural; people needing to "hate" or "bash" or negatively stereotype those who are different from themselves in some way are the source of our social dysfunctions, imo.

My mom, on the other hand, would laugh if she were reading this thread. She's never been above laughing at herself, or recognizing that, no matter what group you may focus on, there are plenty of people in that group who "don't get it."

One night Savage was going off on Ginsberg calling him the one responsible for the decline of the western world or something.

They must have had a falling out, although if Savage was the same then as he is now, Ginsberg probably told him to take a flying leap.

What a monster - the poor dog! I wondered why he would keep a dog when he doesn't even want to touch its water bowl, then I realized: the dog is the only being who would actually venerate him as much as he thinks he deserves.

In that pair, the dog is the superior being for sure. I wouldn't want to touch SAVAGE's water bowl.

given his tirades against folks who are not white (veiled as all sorts of slurs tied to immigrants) - but it would be interesting to know the race of the manager vs the race of the busboy - b/c if my hunch is correct it is a demonstration that vile radio jocks like this are not, as Rush claims when called on his vile rhetoric, "entertainment" or just schtick - but actual representations of vile behavior in the real world.

87. This turd sued our site Takebackthemedia.com
for about a half a million bucks - we got some free lawyers and about 10 K in donations (got a whopping check from Janeane Garofalo)who came on board and fought the good fight for us and WE WON.

We had said that he was a CULT Worshipper after I did a little digging and sure enough we got the papers served on us in California, a SLAPP suit designed to shut us up, they sued us from Chicago because only 17 states will even allow a SLAPP suite in the country anymore..

Our lawyers were actually tracking the CULT back to the HIVE in Oregon when they dropped the suite - it seems that he was the product of an actual CULT and that there were some VERY STRANGE goings on in Oregon, marital abuse, beatings, hypnotism all kinds of kinky wierd shit..

Once we got to the HIVE, and believe me, the lawyers were DROOLING over asking for discovery on this asshole, getting him on the stand and having him repeat all his nasty remarks on PAPER, which would be public and could be used by oh, say the Chinese Mafia "little yellow Demons" (his remarks), etc..

We were just at the point where we were going to get some real promotion out of this, we'd slammed Limbaugh for millions and could possibly have wrecked this guy when they pulled out..

I'd love to meet him in person and shove his dog up his ass, but I'm an animal lover.. However, had I been in that situation I would have know exactly who that was (I catch stars all the time) and would have walked over and switched his plate with the dog's water dish - then let him have it..

"What are ya gonna do Dickhead? Yah, you talk tough but this old hippy has pieces of guys like you floating in his toilet bowl.. you want a piece of me bring it on.."

I'm into peace and love, but I'll sucker punch a punk in a NY minute when the urge hits :)

Great story, tell him the next time you see him that Takebackthemedia.com says to GO DIE. :)

130. Remember this?
http://www.freewayblogger.com/funwithhateradio.htm

Savage is the subject of the last anecdote on the page, recounted by the hoax-caller/author.

The way in which he mocked and humiliated him, live, on air, in the hearing of his freeper buddies, while he was spluttering in a crescendo of impotent rage, is absolutely unforgettable. In fact, it seems too sublime for mere mortals to read. Like the Victoria Falls to David Livingstone! Angels must have stopped to listen in wonder.

Your anecdote, VolcanoJen, adds almost intolerable piquancy to it. Almost, but not quite!

First, I am the manager of a retail business in Berkeley, CA. Have been for a long time. As a general rule I get along well with customers but there are always a few that get under my skin. Over the years I've learned to see them coming and for the most part manage to keep out of their way.

The owner of the store and I have both on occasion asked people to leave the premises.

1) We tell our employees that if they are having a problem with a customer (could be any number of things), they should come get one of us at once. 2) Although we will bend over backwards to make a reasonable customer happy and will, without question or hesitation, replace any defective product or refund a customer's money if they are not satisfied, what we will not tolerate is ABUSIVE customers. Specifically, this means a customer who has lost their temper or is in any way becoming offensive or abusive either to one of us or to one of our employees. We politely ask them to leave. On one occasion we had to back the customer out of the door (no touching), lock the door and call the police. The person was threatening physical violence against the owner. Worse for them, they were doing so when the police arrived!

154. That's a great story, and I'm pleased to hear that.
I can only speak from personal experience, 10+ years in the bar/restaurant business.

A manager who steps up to the plate for their employees in this business is rare.

I've worked exclusively in independent taverns, nightclubs and restaurants, so I hope it's different in a corporate-owned dining spot. For the most part, I love working in independently-owned establishments, but I do think they kiss the customer's ass a bit more than necessary. I could actually see this happening in my restaurant, although otherwise it's really a wonderful place to work.

You're right, though, I shouldn't make sweeping generalizations. I'm glad to hear that some managers, even outside the restaurant biz, stick up for their hard-working, under-appreciated employees.

167. His imperiousness should be no surprise...look!
I confess not really knowing who he is, so I searched for a pic and info... Here's what the man says of himself on the corp. site....

Author of the best selling books 'The Savage Nation," "The Enemy Within," and "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder," Michael Savage is the number one drive time talk show host in the San Francisco market and in many other cities across America. He is currently syndicated on over 350 stations.

"I guess people love my show because of my hard edge combined with humor and education," he says. "Those who listen to me say they hear a bit of Plato, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Moses, Jesus, and Frankenstein. I pull many of my life experiences, including that of father, son, husband, brother, ice cream factory worker, busboy, lifeguard, writer, scientist, and my huge library of books," says Savage.

208. I got scared there for a minute
I thought you were comparing me to the Greats of Society :)

Yeah, that guy has Mussolini in his bones - I just see a sick, sad, mentally ill old man.. actually he has issues with his father if you listen and being Male in general.. we used to pay good money to go to the edge of town and look at the two headed babies in the Carnival as a kid, I think right wing talk radio is the equivalent of a freak show nowadays with lower expectations cos it's free :)

Not many people call me Mikey anymore, only my best friends, so you're welcome anytime Binka.. god, that kid just gets cuter and cuter..

From what you've told me and with that grin she seems to have been a dolphin in a former life, speed, beauty and a big smile :)

I always want to ask dolphins, "What in the hell is so funny? WHat do you know that I don't?" THey are like little godheads cruising the oceans.

Hope your son is rollin' and keeping safe and sound. I'm thinking about him now and then, Bush is toast he HAS to bring them home, keep thinking that, he killed NO and that's 10,000 souls screaming in his brain that he refuses to account for alone, and no amount of money will make them go away ..

179. That proves he is a liar, too.
Nobody (at least nobody who is sane) who ever worked as a busboy would dare treat restaurant workers that way - check out the upcoming "Waiting" at a theater near you. If you've seen the previews, you know what I'm saying.

As a side note, I spent upwards of 20 years in the business from busboy to short-order cook, from truck stops to 4-star resorts, and in that time I never resorted to such methods, or witnessed them used, but I heard of them within weeks of my first job. I have also known many in the business who I think are unstable enough to actually do that. I don't take chances.

176. Wow, how many lost girlfriends to hippies on this thread?
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 04:08 AM by joefree1
I was pretty young then but I do remember with fondness how us working class heros were liberated by the hippie lifestyle. Even though we were poor we could still be cool enough to steal some preppie's girlfriend away. Just needed some flowers painted on our jeans and know a few tunes on an acoustic guitar.

Course my long gone big curly "fro" helped too.

My appologies if any of the unfotunate preppies was someone on this thead.

Peace,
Joe

I mock hippies, and I am neither a preppy (they are equally as loathesome), nor have I ever lost a girlfriend to either a hippie or a preppy - or anyone.

Nice projection of your situation on others though, but it fails as an analysis.

"Liberated", indeed. That is exactly the kind of grandiose shit that keeps me mocking hippies.

198. who's projecting?
Grandiose indeed. Coming from South Sac we were lucky to afford our ten dollar bags of mellow herbs let alone be "grandiose." But we could still be cool and vibe on each other's mellow ways. We weren't condescending in any way. Just happy that we could afford the fashions of the day which were old jeans and flower shirts.

But if mocking hippies is your bag then have fun. I'd rather mock the mockers.

"Mellow herbs"... that explans a lot. Most overrated drug ever. P.T. Barnum was right in ways he never dreamed of.

I mock all kinds... I love how these defensive replies have proven me right time and again.

Then again, I don't kill my brain cells with dumbshit pot.

I am not the one who protesteth too much. See the above replies to me for THAT.

I made one reply above and the hippies came crawling out of the bong for me.
