Lyndon Johnson, 1967:--"We shall Stay the Course"
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apwashington_story.asp?category=1151&slug=Words%20of%20War

WASHINGTON -- Bush officials bristle at the suggestion the war in Iraq might look anything like Vietnam. Yet just as today's anti-war protests recall memories of yesteryear, President Bush's own words echo those of President Johnson in 1967, a pivotal year for the U.S. in Vietnam.

"America is committed to the defense of South Vietnam until an honorable peace can be negotiated," Johnson told the Tennessee Legislature on March 15, 1967. Despite the obstacles to victory, the president said, "We shall stay the course."

After 14 Marines died in a roadside bombing on Aug. 3, Bush declared: "We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. And the job is this: We'll help the Iraqis develop a democracy."

The two wars were waged quite differently even though they shared similar aims.

2. I've been to
Binghamton NY for the St. Patrick's Four trial. Even more than before, I am convinced that the war in Iraq is the modern Vietnam. Besides the geographic differences, there are many more significant similarities. What we are doing is evil.

I will say this, though: LBJ turned into a mad man, but he was haunted by his conscience. I see no evidence of Bush feeling the range of human emotions that LBJ experienced.

6. Ah, the National Inquirer story!
Without even considering any report from such a source, the comment on Bush's lack of human emotions has to do with the president in his most sober of states.

8. Oh I've read it.
And enjoy it for sure. I've also got years and years of working with people, from children to the elderly, with substance abuse issues. My wife is the director of a county alcohol & drug abuse services agency. So I keep in mind that even though many of the posts on the thread in question -- started, in fact, by one of my best friends -- that no one here has the ability to do more than speculate. However, what we know for sure is that George W, Bush has the features of a personality type that is equally lacking in compassion and the associated features no matter if he is intoxicated on power or booze. He has exhibited no behaviors that are not equally easy to attribute to his being raised in an awful manner at ages 3 to 5, than to the possibility that he has relapsed with alcohol. For a variety of reasons, I think that many people would prefer to believe he is drinking; I only know that I don't know, and no one on DU does, either.

10. It is not
any different than it has been for some time. His ability to speak is not appreciably different today than it was in 2000. Give him a script, and he does fair at delivering it; have him off script, and he has the glaring disconnects. It's just as easily attributed to stress as anything else.

People sweat. It is not natural for people not to sweat. The point about his red face falls likewise into the false perception created by tv, that everyone has wonderful clear skin, and no one sweats, and lines are always delivered with flare.

Is it possible that George has been drinking? Certainly. Addiction is a disease with relapse being fairly common. But I think that given George's personality type, every obnoxious, mean, and nasty thing he does comes straight from his inner essence: people like him tend to show their ugly side without relapsing. I do not think that there is any serious evidence he is drinking, but I do think he is a vicious, cruel man.

4. Nominated.
Maybe it's a Texas thing?

Dang it, there was a thread last night, some guy looking for Republican quotes to back up his argument against * to his brother or something. I think this would be perfect. Texas Republicans hate LBJ so anything that drew comparisons between Chimpy and him would certainly be useful to that DUer. But I can't find the thred now! :(
