Anybody know what Rita did in Cuba?
It looks like it took a heavy hit. Was GITMO spared?

1. Just from looking at
http://skeetobiteweather.com/picservice.asp?t=m&m=18, I'd be surprised if Cuba got much more than a bit of wind and rain for a few hours. It was at it's closest approach when it became a category 1 storm. Dangerous, if you're not prepared, or near the eye.

Gitmo's at the SE edge of the island. Itprobably didn't even see many clouds from Rita.

2. No Report of Casualties, neither dead nor injured
http://www.plenglish.com.mx/article.asp?ID={72FEF47F-BC03-4EC8-81CD-CB278BF96371}&language=EN

Contingency measures proved once again effective and there´s been no report of casualties, neither dead nor injured on the island, where almost 238,000 people were evacuated to safe shelters.

Nearly 60,000 students from boarding schools (junior high and high) were taken to evacuation centers and their schools secured. Thousands of tourists in Key Coco and Varadero were also transfered to safer destinations.

The season´s 17th tropical storm shove along at about 40 miles off the Cuban northern coast as it trekked through the northern waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Straigt of Florida, pouring high rainfall accumulations on that section of the island. Strong sustained winds blew at between 50 to 60 mph causing electrical shortages.

Havana woke up Wednesday to a very rainy day still. The rainfall causes flooding in some sections of the city on Tuesday, particularly in lower parts of the Vedado neighborhood. In Guanimar Beach, Havana Province, the sea penetrated up to 170 yards from the coastline.

3. Didn't do much in Cuba.
1. The eye, where the highest winds are, went north of Cuba.

2. It didn't start growing into a monster until it was past the Florida straights. It was a minor hurricane when it was close to Cuba.

The northern coast of Cuba got brushed by 50 mph winds and lots of rain.

Gitmo is on the extreme southeast coast of Cuba, well away from the path of Rita.

4. It Wasn't Much Of A Storm Back Then
I don't think it even made Hurricane status (75 mph winds) as it passed Cuba. I believe it was a "Tropical Storm", which is the same thing northerners would call a "Gale", meaning it had winds between 40 and 74 mph. Not a whole lot of damage from those sorts of storms - though of course any storm can kill and do property damage.
