Earlier in the summer, I went to the Downing Street Minutes rally with a poster filled with names of DU members who couldn't be there in person. I had posted only four hours previously asking who wanted to be represented, and in that four hours, I received 103 names.

This time, I'm giving you three days' notice. Please keep this kicked/rec'd for those who might see it in the next few days. (Yes, I am a whore.)

I will get the biggest piece of posterboard I can find and I will be at the DU rally meeting point on time with it. So if you would like your name on there, please post or e-mail me privately (the witch next door - that's all one word, no spaces - at gmail) with the name or handle you'd like on the poster.

I'd also like suggestions as to what it should say, as I expect there to be press and I'd like to advertise DU if possible. Last time it said "Here in Spirit: Democratic Underground" and your names were all written around it.

So if you'd like to be represented or have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

I'll try to get to what I'd suggest for the upcoming
rally before the fold, and the why after...

The First What: Getting a few technologically minded volunteers set
up in coffee shops around DC with laptops and internet access during
the protest. These volunteers would work to dump video/audio/and
photo files from the many people with recording equipment out in the
crowds.

The Second What: Getting a few sites, like Crooks and Liars, with
massive bandwith allocation to put them up in something approaching
real-time (half day lag, whatever).

The reasons for doing this are many, but I think one that appeals
most to me is because it is possible. It should be done because it
can be done.

There is alot of talk about the blog revolution and grassroots media,
but this could be an opportunity to prove feasibilty by providing
content that no news organization is likely to touch for more than a
15 minute segment.

Fact is, however, just because the media might not pick up a detailed
view of the goings on and run with it, doesn't mean that people who
couldn't make it to the rallies won't want to check out the unedited
version of what went on, as captured by hundreds of sort-of-tech-
savvy-or-at-least-can-press-a-button political activists.

With very little effort, and maybe some expenditure for bandwidth,
laptop equipped volunteers in, say, 5 Starbucks,could dump video gold
from the Mall and the moment onto the web in minutes. The point is
that it's not the broadcast networks who would decide what was fit to
make it over the transom, it'd be the recorders, the volunteers, and
the hosters.

There will be video gold, and it'd be nice for the blogosphere to
beat the mainstream media when it comes to airing it

DISCLAIMER: I posted this diary on Kos last night around 2 AM and it
didn't get much play, though I'm not unconvinced that something like
this could be set up fairly easily.
