Rita turns east: It's Louisiana Again
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 12:27 PM by longship
Rita has turned to the right enough that it is now predicted to landfall in western Louisiana or east Texas. Gov Blanco is evacuating everybody south of I-10. She has resquested 15,000 additional NG.

This is very sad news.

4. Yep, LA is fucked again.
For Katrina I had a housefull of relatives and friends from NO and as far away as Tuscaloosa AND we had a wedding the Saturday following the storm.

This time we are expecting everyone from Houston and Lake Charles, LA. Our home is now officially a hotel.

I'm not complaining, just tired.

6. You can see it turning
I swear, it doesn't look like it is all that different from the Katrina path. It appears to be turing in the same direction.

I fear it will have another hit to NOLA, only this time, they will be on the east side instead of the west. I wish they could have gotten all the bodies out of there before now, because I fear some will never be found after this storm hits there.

I am not a very religious person, but I am saying a little prayer for all of those, living, dead, and dying in the path of this storm. :(

9. The blocking "high" is much more to the east than earlier forecasts.
This could, potentially, bode ill for Louisiana. It ain't over till the fat lady sings, and the fat lady is Rita.

10. Here are the latest computer models from
Weather Underground.

It does look like it's turning east. I wouldn't wish this storm on anyone but LA is the last state in the union that needs this right now.

12. Right, but LA will still get a hit from this storm...
even if the eye makes landfall in TX. And I heard last night on MSNBC(? maybe CNN) that it could take as little as 6 inches of rain to reflood NO. Plus, there is still a good 48 hours until it makes landfall; more than enough time to continue making the turn. Trust me, I hope I'm wrong.

13. What turned east can also turn west.
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 01:05 PM by igil
The only thing it's done so far is make a hard problem harder: instead of evacuating Corpus Christi through Galveston, it's Corpus Christi through SW Louisiana.

The good thing: it'll likely be east of Galveston Bay. Smaller storm surge.

(Edited to replace "lesser" with "smaller". Great, now my grammar's rotting.)

14. Of course, Rita is NOT turning east at the moment.
Its current heading still appears to be 285 according to NOAA. That is hardly "turning east".
