42. I shared the same thoughts with my fundie neighbor - that he and I
were going to be the ones paying for this mess. His response was to bring everyone home and shut our borders - no aid to foreigners, no troops overseas, no involvement in international dealings.

At least he was smart enough to get a vasectomy before he had a second kid.

13. Could we end the stupid anti-drug ads...
but keep some money available to develop sane drug education programs and laws? (I am all for legalizing pot and treating drug additions as a health crisis, rather than a law-and-order crisis).

What they need to end is the WAR on drugs; the WAR on porn; and the WAR on terrorism -- none of these are entities that can be addressed with a WAR.

43. Drug War ads are also bribery to the media
People forget that those billions and billions, as Carl Sagan might say, also act as a bribe to the media companies.

There are such things as parents and adults can think for themselves. We do not need the government involved in thoughtherding, especially when they use lies so everyone will believe their fantasies.

86. Very good point -- so, we stop paying billions and billions,
we lay claim to our own damn airwaves and cease paying them a single solitary penny to air ads we want to have aired.

'Information' and 'thought-herding' exist on a continuum. We can provide information without telling people what to think or what to do.

I am one of those 'information is power' people...

And they won't be.

It will take WORK to get New Orleans back, so obviously we don't need workers but rather we need CONTRACTS!

People with assets (you call them rich, Bush calls them his donation base) GET contracts, and _those_ contracts represent legal promises to fix Murika. Thats good fur Murikans.

For any income over $1 million. I prefer $700,000, but they're too gutless for that. Say, 80% after that first mil. THEN commence negotiations.

Don't even discuss the spending cuts. ONLY discuss the amount of the temporary disaster tax.

36. Oh, let us discuss the Big Spending Cut, the one that nobody will touch
This goddamn illegal, immoral war for oil that we have in Iraq. The majority of Americans are against it now, in fact that is the first place that the majority of Americans want to cut federal spending.

So let us pack up, pull out, and spend the money that we save from that war in rebuilding the damage that Katerina did and that Rita is going to do.

Oh, and while we're at it, instead of the poor and middle class having to suffer the brunt of the economic burden, let us reinsitute the estate tax, matter of fact, let us reinstitute it at the rate that FDR ran it, 75%. After all, you can't take it with you when you die.

And some windfall profits taxation of oil companies seem to be a good idea too.

The poor and the middle class have gotten screwed all of my forty plus years, it is time for the haves and have mores to start bearing their fair share.

29. Did you hear Mike Malloy talking about this last night?
Several people emailed him to say that feds had appeared at several public schools in Texas and Mississippi to remove Katrina students who had just enrolled. The teachers and students and principals were angry about this - having just worked hard to help the kids settle in.

Last night Malloy suggested that those kids had been enrolled in local Christian schools. Money, money, money, money - money! for their faith-base friends.

(And, yes, I meant to type faith-base instead of faith-based -- because I don't think these people are based in faith -- they are, instead, base as in rude and low.)

And I'll bet that is just what they plan to do. People like Maureen Dowd and Krugman and Ivins have pen poised above paper ready to report on the Congress that is using Katrina as an excuse to shove their Far Right Wing ideology down the throats of Americans, increasing the divide between rich and poor, blah, blah, blah...

Question: Will the GOP ever get a clue?

Answer: I hope not, at least not before Fall 2006.

19. Story up now
An internal Republican Study Committee document which is now available online and was simultaneously leaked to RAW STORY Thursday outlines an array of huge cuts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, including the elimination of funding for Amtrak and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The document was first reported on by Roll Call.

RAW STORY has analyzed the pages and presented some of the more specific cuts. At this stage, these are cuts proposed by the Committee, which is composed of 86 House Republicans.

You know, the elephant in the living room that everyone ignores.

The budget that is almost 5 times larger than that of the #2 defense spender in the world.

You could combine the budgets of everything the Neocons want to put on the chopping block, and it wouldn't even add up to one tenth of what we spend on tanks, bombs, and guns on an annual basis.

The $400 billion is just the operating budget.

If you include the costs of occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's closer to $600 billion.

But what do they want to cut?

The NEA, whose annual operating budget is $139.4 million.

89. I'm so sorry to hear that..
If it's any comfort, I spoke with a Senator's aide who was familiar with the document and said that the proposals don't have much support within the party.

52. When are these people going to learn
that unless we take from the rich and give to the poor, there will never be equality nor will there be peace. This is the time for everyone to give what they can to those who have nothing now and, thanks to the greedy corporations, had nothing before. It is not the time to take away from the backbone of America, which is those very people who need help! This is nothing more than there opportunity to continue to keep miorities down. Enjoy your orgy of hate, repukes! You'll get what's coming to you in the end!

59. Notice the defense and HL security cuts?
they mostly affect Military dependents...like cutting the dependents school program and adding HSA's to the Champus Program (health program.

Also shows "savings" from selling off surplus military ships...

This is the smallest category of suggested cuts/savings.

61. But I thought they were having this huge reconstruction
effort? HA HA - they have themselves in a bind now. By ruling out tax increases, Bush has essentially said that the poor and middle class will be hurt to help other poor and middle class. And the PBS thing effects everyone - that will never get through.

75. It is all, relatively speaking, nickle and dime shit they wanna cut
Here's a clue--slap some taxes on our wealthiest citizens, and let's get the fuck out of Iraq...we'll be able to dig ourselves out of this mess in no time!!!

But hey, that might interfere with the transfer of cash to the monkey's pal--the CRONY EXPRESS!!

82. We spend more on Iraq in a month
Than we've spent on the NEA in the last 20 years.

Relatively speaking, the money the US spends on programs like the NEA is like the money you or I would spend on a pack of gum.

77. how about missle defense?
How many billions are wasted on missle defense and it doesn't even work??

Where's the freaking $9 billion they 'lost' in Iraq?

Where are the trillions missing from the pentagon?

How about we fire the entire governnment, that would save quite a bit of cash.

What are they even for anyhow? They aren't serving US. They are clearly serving themselves only. Take FEMA for instance, if they would have just gotten out of the way, Americans, Canadians, Germans... everyone who was willing would have been able to help and thousands of lives would have been saved. Now they just gave FEMA 60 billion more to do what? Pay the company that is hiding the bodies? I didn't use to be an anarchist but this is getting ridiculous. At this point in time we have every right to abolish this entire government and start over.

Bush proposed it during the election, I think the House passed it. Wasn't it something like 1.5 billion? Was that ever passed? I didn't see it on the list of cuts but maybe because it ultimately died.

Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 04:50 PM by Jackpine Radical
No good reason to be spending more than the rest of the world combined on defense.

Legalize & tax pot.

Decriminalize other drugs & start closing prisons. Use treatment & alternative sentencing to cut the prison population in half. (2 million prisoners costing about 25k apiece per year behind bars)

No cuts would be necessary for social spending (health, education, social services, etc.)

94. "Reduce Medicaid Administrative Spending"
One of the tasty little items they're pushing.

Supposedly, this will make states "more efficient" in the way they spend their Medicaid dollars.

In other words, it will become even more impossible to get Medicaid than it is now.

Even more people with no health care coverage at all.

Kill, level, cut eliminate the Department of Defense. Bring home all troops and protect our borders only. That one single item over ten years would be ten times the savings.
