Bush: protesters "wrong"; pullout would repeat "mistakes" that led to 9-11

PENTAGON President Bush says an abrupt pullout from Iraq would repeat what he calls the "costly mistakes" that led to Nine-Eleven.

Speaking as protesters gather in Washington for a weekend march, the president said anti-war activists are well-intentioned -- but wrong.

He says withdrawing from Iraq would allow terrorists "to claim an historic victory over the United States."

Bush spoke after meeting with top Pentagon commanders. He said terrorists in Iraq are testing America's willingness to defend itself, and that if the nation fails that test, the consequences "would be enormous."

Bush said terrorists had been led to doubt America's courage after the U-S response to the Iran hostage crisis, the Beirut barracks bombings and other attacks.

13. I'll tell you if you promise not to tell anyone.
1. Oil (for the Big Oil CEO's paychecks and options: certainly not for the consumers)

2. Taxpayers' money (for the MIC CEO's paychecks and options too...)

24. We're there to help Haliburton make their legal bills
-- remember all that nasty asbestos? Good news, now they can work NO so we may see a pullout sooner than later.

And, so long New Orleans.

He has been demonstrably wrong on too many issues.

9. If he would look at what led to 9/11, he'd find peace
protestors had nothing to do with it. Bin Laden said he was angry with the US because of our troops stationed on Saudi soil, our close ties to corrupt regimes like the House of Saud and the appearance of favoritism of Israel. Don't think peace activists caused any of it.

16. Now you're getting somewhere.
The things America needs to do to end terrorism have nothing to do with killing people, and the only "message" we would be sending by withdrawal and recompense is that we understand the errors and wrongs we've committed against the Middle East.

Costly mistakes that led to 9/11. Is he talking about his admin cutting the Able Danger program several months before 9/11?

Mr. Prez. you need to look in the mirror! You are the costly mistake.

So the new reason we are in Iraq is to prove to terrorist that we will defend ourselves. In what way is the war in Iaq a war of self defense? Only in a very, very troubled persons mind does that make sense.

Why would an "abrupt pullout" bee wrong? Because it would leave the impression we were chansed out by radicals. Of course, if we just announced a phased withdrawl plan, then the trrrrrsts would just "wait us out". So according to Incurious George, we can't actually leave.

Now, given that part of what fuels the violence is the perception that we won't leave, this is a bad thing. Which means an announced withdrawl schedule is needed, and it is imperative that we stick to that schedule no matter what.

If we don't leave according to a timetable of our choosing, ANY withdrawl will be interpreted as "we were chased out".

Not that this has anything to do with why Chim-Chim and the PNAC gallery really want, but it's best to cut off their excuses.

30. That's what they said about Viet Nam - But, "Peace with Honor" prevailed
* Johnson, March 15, 1967: "America is committed to the defense of South Vietnam until an honorable peace can be negotiated." Despite the obstacles to victory, the president said, "We shall stay the course."

Bush on Aug. 3, 2005: "We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. And the job is this: We'll help the Iraqis develop a democracy."

* Johnson on Aug. 16, 1967, on South Vietnam's government: "Our nation was not born easily. There were times in those years of the 18th century when it seemed as if we might not be born at all. Given that background, we ought not to be astonished that this struggle in Vietnam continues."

Bush, on Aug. 27, 2005: "Like our own nation's founders over two centuries ago, the Iraqis are grappling with difficult issues, such as the role of the federal government. What is important is that Iraqis are now addressing these issues through debate and discussion -- not at the barrel of a gun."

* Johnson, April 6, 1967: "Be assured that the death of your son will have meaning," he Johnson told the parents of a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor. "For I give you also my solemn pledge that our country will persist -- and will prevail -- in the cause for which your boy died."

Bush on Aug. 24: "These brave men and women gave their lives for a cause that is just and necessary for the security of our country, and now we will honor their sacrifice by completing their mission."

Find any similarities...?
