29. actually, he may have revived the art of celebrity impersonations

Even people who don't look remotely like * can do a decent ad-lib of him. All you have to do is get a mean squint going, blurt out something totally absurd, and then get all flustered and angry and storm out of the room when people tell you your accent doesn't sound authentic (neither is his!).

If you don't believe me, invite your friends over for a couple of drinks, and then propose a "George W. Bush-off". Even Republicans can have fun ridiculing him. Two of his best-known TV impersonators, the guy on Leno's show (Steve Bridges) and his predecessor Brent Mendenhall, are GOP supportes.

Bridges spent tens of thousands of dollars perfecting the makeup and wardrobe, and he's more than recouped his investment so far.

42. He's actually met Bush
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 04:21 PM by Lisa
He wasn't in makeup at the time (which makes Bush's "are you me?" question a bit more reasonable!) And the dreaded "Ma Bush" (Bar herself) has reportedly signed off on the show ... she thought it was funny ... and we know how defensive she can get! Either she was mad at Georgie that day, or the performance was so inoffensive that even she couldn't pick on it. A lot of the promoters Bridges uses advertise as "clean acts" -- no cussing, no innuendo, etc. -- I've heard that he's also a youth pastor at some evangelical church. I don't know if he uses the Bush makeup and act when he's preaching.

http://www.stevebridges.com/

He makes more than $15k per appearance. Sure, he has to bring his makeup guy along, and pay a scriptwriter, and getting ready takes several hours -- but that's pretty good money, compared to most other impersonators. He even does custom videos starting at $5k -- his agency even built a replica White House Press Room set (in Illinois ... I guess he comes out from California once a month to do scheduled shoots in it).

Poppy made a point of being nice to Dana Carvey (who impersonated him on Saturday Night Live) -- possibly to appear to be "a good sport" and defuse the criticism. (Will Ferrell, who did a devastating rendition of Dubya on the same show, supposedly refused a meeting for that reason. He didn't want to give the impression that he was being leaned on.)

This kind of relates to your question, about how Bridges could be a Bush supporter when he's making jokes about his lack of intelligence, laziness, etc. -- in a way, this is actually safer for Bush than if someone questioned his integrity, honest, and sanity. They've managed to make it part of his "just a regular guy" image. To the right-wingers, stupidity (and arrogance) aren't seen as much of a problem. They'd go after a smart, qualified person who committed adultery, but not someone who was accused of being poorly-informed, inattentive, or just plain dumb (as long as he acted like their version of "a moral person".

p.s. check out the contract rider at the Bridges site. He uses planted audience members, just like the real guy!

"G. Four or five "shills" (members of the audience willing to ask Artist a question during his performance)"

People may not realize it but Texas was in serious danger of being overgrown by killer brush. This is not your ordinary brush, these monsters would slowly grow up to your bedrooms windows, and when you were sleeping they would literally suck your brain dry of any intelligent thoughts leaving the equivalent of cabbage between your ears.

Bush being a man of courage and action would not be intimidated by this killer brush. He knew he could never let up in spite of the overwhelming odds, he had succumbed to his fears once before when he abandoned Alabama to the Viet Cong Hordes and he would not let it happen again. Yes, there were distractions like those pesky Presidential Daily Briefings about terrorism and stuff but he would not be deterred. Damn it the brush needed to be killed! and he was just the man to do it. To this day all brush in Texas, especially the Crawford area now quiver in fear whenever Bush walks by. It is like the neocons say, Bush Good! Brush Bad!

I'll give you $200 at the end of the year, but then I'll raise your heating bill, double the gas prices, double your healthcare costs and cut all your benefits as well as outsource your job to India. As well as make you less safe from terrorists and natural disasters. And at the end of the year I get to kick you in the balls one last time.

Does that sound like a good plan?

This is not to you of course, but to those tax cut morans.

Never mind that many of his appointees are just as cold-hearted, petty and ruthless as the white men who usually staff these jobs, or that they are used shamelessly for photo-ops and pandering for the republican party. It helps Americans to see a black woman as Secretary of State, even if she's doing a piss-poor job.

Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 11:13 AM by Tower
Friends and family used to say I was exaggerating when I said that we live in a corporatocracy. They'd laugh when I said corporate media outlets do not report news but instead function as the PR wings of their respective conglomerates. They'd chuckle when I said the real division in this country is between wealth and poverty, not left and right- or when I said that we're living in a sort of under-the-radar empire, that serves the interests of Corporate America and ignores everyone else.

They don't laugh anymore.

That's the one good thing Bush has done for this country. He's pulled the cover off the machine.
