These are some of the photos taken by Associated Press photographers, which FEMA wanted blocked. At the request of CNN, a federal judge in Texas blocked emergency officials in New Orleans from preventing the media from covering the recovery of bodies from Hurricane Katrina.

1. well, that was very heartbreaking

i keep asking myself how could this happen here. At an intellectual level, we can blame it on incompetence, greed, and mismanagement. But this is the United States of America, the richest most powerful country in the world. We've landed men on the moon. We've got rovers exploring Mars. We're uncovering secrets of the universe with the Hubble. We're leaders in all the basic sciences disciplines. We have many of the best institutions of higher learning in the world. We have the best engineering talent in the world. We pioneered computer technology. We created the internet that has transformed world commerce and culture.

And meanwhile, people lay rotting in the streets of New Orleans.

I just don't understand how this could happen.
