Monster Crocodile Just a reminder what could come out of the Gulf
Edited on Thu Sep-22-05 08:08 PM by political_invader
The pictures are real enough, but they're weren't taken in New Orleans. These are pictures of the Monster Crocodile of Poinhttp://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_pointe_noire_croc.htmte-Noire (in the Republic of the Congo). They've been circulating for over two years. David Emery notes that the crocodile was really estimated to be 16 feet long and weighed about 1874 lbs. That's still a lot bigger than I'd ever care to encounter.

Specialists said that he was looking to eat humans because he was too old to catch animals. For the past few months in some villages close to Pointe Noire people were complaining that some people in their villages have been disappearing, could be this crocodile. This crocodile was killed by the army last Sunday at 3:00 pm, currently he is in the freezer at the Azur hotel.

Edited to add last:

11. Actually, Crocs are older than Dinosaurs and were higher on the food chain

than most dinosaurs, even carnivorous ones. Dinosaurs aren't reptiles, btw. The closest living relatives are birds.

The biggest Croc of all time was Deinosuchus. At 40-50 feet long, it may have been the most dangerous predator to ever have lived.

Look at the size of this skull (note the normal croc skull in the foreground for comparison):

And this is considered a small one.

7. Me too.
What a tragedy if they killed something that had survived for that long against all odds.

8. crocs in the gulf?
i doubt it

there are alligators but they have a different personality & are not as aggressive as you would think

there is an animal called the american crocodile but i think it might be a very rare endangered species, possibly only in florida, never heard of it occurring in the western gulf, not sure if i ever heard of it in the gulf at all

not to say it doesn't exist but in texas gulf coast i'm more worried abt those danged blue jellyfish

10. alligators in salt water? they may venture out there but they don't
live there. Sometimes people see alligators in the water at St. George Island but they live in the fresh marshes connected to the ocean.

14. Cuban Crocodile Fact Sheet
Adult Cuban crocodiles generally do not exceed 10.5 feet (3.5 meters) in length, with males being larger than females. Fifteen-foot (5 m) individuals have been found in the past, but are rare.

9. The croc's cousin, the alligator is the critter to be concerned about
in the Gulf States. There is an American crocodile, but they're in Florida, and are very rare.

Alligators don't live in the Gulf - they prefer fresh water, but can live in brackish water. However, they inhabit the bayous and other fresh water courses in the Texas-Louisiana area, and will definitely be stirred up and displaced by the storm surges.

They get that big too sometimes, but those are the real old timers. A six foot alligator can give a human real grief. They don't have to be huge to kill.

17. i think maybe i am just too accustomed to them
i don't fear gators, altho i have grown up & will no longer feed them scraps since i don't want to make them look to ppl for food

my experience is you leave them alone, they leave you alone, they're looking for something chicken-sized to eat

of course you could always get unlucky but i'm more afraid of falling trees than gators at this stage of the game
