Why not Paper Ballots for the 2008 Democratic Primaries?
Perhaps now would be the time for one or more major Democratic candidates to announce that they challenge the party and their rivals to change the nomination rules to require Paper Ballots, hand counted for the 2008 Democratic Primaries.

It would also show the feasibility of Paper Ballots for national offices.

What do you think?

1. It sounds crazy, but I think you might be on to something.
It also might just shame the Pukes into accepting paper ballots universally.

Wait, what am I talking about? They HAVE no shame.

2. Hey, not bad!
Not only would it be a good test run, but how on Earth could any Dem politician be against an honest (primary) election?

Nice thinking.

3. In Minnesota, we used plain paper ballots, hand-counted in the 2004
Democratic Presidential primaries.

At least at my precinct.

I wrote "Dennis Kucinich" on a scrap of paper.

4. I'd just as soon not have Republicans pick the Democratic nominee...
and, to my mind, letting the current voting machine manufacturers do the counting is tantamount to just that.

6. I lived in Mass for 6 years
We voted on paper ballots ... I actually have a photo of my husband and myself voting with our infant daughter (her B-day is today) early in the morning ... it was published in the newspaper. Our paper ballots were cranked into a wooden voting box ... I've never really known about the accuracy of the vote count. I'm a lifelong Dem who voted for George Mc, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Al Gore and my President John Kerry. So there, Bush family, there are many of us who hate what you and your kind starting with the idiot Ronald Reagan did to our country!!!! Oops, just ranting, sorry everyone. The only decent thing Reagan ever did was give us the young Ron!!

Diebold's O'Dell Adds COO Role Amid Glum Results
Greg Levine, 09.21.05, 5:22 PM

NEW YORK - Hail to the chief. And chairman, president and chief operating officer: All those hats will be borne by a single mighty head at Diebold.

The manufacturer of automated teller machines and security and voting devices said on Wednesday that Eric Evans had resigned from the posts of president and COO. Evans jumped ship as Diebold (nyse: DBD - news - people ) slashed its third-quarter earnings view, citing the twin blows of Hurricane Katrina and rising fuel costs, as well as a lower outlook for its ATM business.

Chairman and Chief Executive Walden W. O'Dell will become president and COO, in order to become more involved in the company's worldwide operations. "Our recent financial performance has been unacceptable, and these organizational changes are a major step toward improving our direction," the many-titled O'Dell was quoted as saying by The \

Associated Press.

The AP report says Katrina affected scheduled ATM deliveries, security installations, maintenance and other near-term business throughout the Gulf region. In addition, the storm hindered deliveries of voting machines, costing the company approximately $10 million in revenue during the quarter.

But beyond nature's oft-spoken wrath, O'Dell noted that in North America--source of half the firm's global revenue--some $50 million in lower revenue expectations are tied to customer delays and operational inefficiencies. Diebold did not mention job cuts, but in a conference call with analysts, the CEO and COO said the firm will consider all options.

"We will continue to do significant consolidation and restructuring and make technology investments that should help our costs on both service and manufacturing. We have closed one plant this year, and we are reducing the size of others," O'Dell said.

13. This is crazy also
I've lived in PA, NJ, PA (again), VA, MD, NJ (again), MA, NJ (again) and finally in Ohio ... never did I find this open primary nonsense which exists in Ohio ... in all of the other states where we resided, we voted as registered Democrats. Here in Ohio, you can vote in primary races ... thus, voters can skew the primaries!

16. Paper ballots were destroyed in 2000 and probably in 2004 when
they had the phoney terrorist scare. Paper is almost as bad as black box.

18. Did I hear a message from Jimmy Carter today ....
mentioning that Al Gore won in 2000. However, why is Jimmy Carter teaming up with Baker regarding election reform and Bill Clinton teaming up with Poppy Bush for fund-raising .......... aaargh, they all make me sick!

19. Rawstory has it...
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/Carter_says_Gore_won_2000_el_0922.html

I'm guessing Carter went into the exercise hoping to bring attention to the issue and his new frankness is a sign he's realized how used he's been.
