How to get the NY Times OPED Columns WITHOUT paying. LEGALLY
Thanks to Rachel Maddow. She mentioned this on her show this AM

http://www.johntabin.com/neverpayretail/

Here is the story from WIRED:

<snip>

Never Pay Retail was created on the same day that TimesSelect began. The blog links to other newspapers that syndicate the Times' Op-Ed content and are putting it online for free. To access the Op-Ed content and archives on the Times' site, readers have to pay $50 a year.

"If The New York Times doesn't want the eyeballs for their advertisers then their syndicates deserve them, so why not make it easier to find (the articles)?" said John Tabin, the creator of Never Pay Retail.

Never Pay Retail began to circulate around the blogosphere and was linked on one popular blog, Instapundit.com, Tuesday evening.

Tabin, an online columnist for The American Spectator, says that it takes him just a couple of minutes each day to scour Google News and find the newspapers that are reprinting the columns.

1. The times ought to talk to "The Independent"
I stopped reading it even though I think it's a great paper. Why pay to read something they're already making money on through advertising.

The NYT is showing it's ass on this one.

2. CNN started charging for videos and
nobody brought that package and nobody watched their videos. Now they are "free" with an Ad, which is OK by me.

5. Unfortunately, won't last long...
...from the same link
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,68938,00.html

But The Times says that since TimesSelect went into effect, newspapers are allowed to use the paper's content in their print editions, but not online.

(snip)

Upon being alerted to the existence of Never Pay Retail, McNulty said that the Times has contacted the publishers of the online editions of those newspapers and that the posts were all honest mistakes or oversights.

(snip)

The Times said that it's watching for sites that don't follow the syndication rules.

"We don't expect such infringements to spread or to last long and we will be keeping a close eye on it," McNulty said.

Yet, this link will in all probability not be subject to the restrictions, becuase it is not a newspaper:
http://web.mit.edu/krugman/www/ -- AND Because it's Krugman's own site. :)

Don't know if Maureen Dowd has one.

9. ALSO . . . if you have a library card to your local library, you have
access to a large online database of newspapers for FREE.

All I had to do was call my library and give them my library card number and they gave me the password to the database.

Most all libraries have this access.

Our database in NC is called "NCLIVE" and all libraries in our state have access for its library members.

10. My response, "Times Op-Eds: I'm Not Buying"
"I'm not an op-ed reader so I don't really have a dog in this fight, and I dare say, neither will most of the country. Contrary to the high opinion the Times has of itself and its columnists, most Americans are not only more familiar with Miss Piggy than Maureen Dowd, they’d probably be more inclined to read what Miss Piggy has to say as well.

What I do find interesting, however, is the reaction to the fees. In my estimation, the comments at Never Pay Retail expose exactly what's wrong in this country..."

You will have to click and tolerate barely noticeable advertising to read the rest... :)

11. Does Krugman ever tell us anything we didn't already know?
Every time I read Krugman,he's just basically agreeing with me. I can't remember the last time he told me something that wasn't widely disseminated in the media.

There's nothing essential going on at the New York Times op/ed page, certainly nothing worth $50 a year.

And he can spot the fraud in cooked numbers very quickly.
